81 small squares, broken into nine squares of 9 each, nine numbers across and nine numbers down can't be repeated in the same row, nine-square, or column.

    Today's Sudoku in the Chronicle:
Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 once:

    . . . . . 7 . 1 4
    . . . . 2 . . 5 .
    8 . 5 1 . . . . 9
    1 . 8 . . 4 9 . .
    . 4 . 7 . 9 1 6 .
    2 . . 3 . . 5 . .
    7 8 . . . . . . 3
    . . . . 9 . . . 1
    . . . 4 . 3 6 . .

(the dots stand for a missing number. HINT: If I were you, I'd start with writing a 1 on the 7th spot of the 5th row)

I can't seem to put this friggin' game of MATH SKILLs down. Anyone else had headaches or gotten into marital fights because you couldn't figure out what number went where, like me?

I love math, by the way.

I was all over this game a couple months ago. But I sort of hit the wall after a while. The "expert" level puzzles were too hard for me, but the "medium" ones were too easy.

This site has pretty much all the sudoku puzzles that you could ever want.

    HEY!

    ZIMA is good!

(I can't help it. I got hooked on it when they were giving it out for free at a launch party in Memphis.)

Sorry...that was a personal shot to the Swoly-N one...Zima isn't a gay drink, not that there's anything wrong with that.

didn't mean to infuriate the Zima drinkers around the world.

    i kid i kid

My wife is addicted now. She'd able to respond to this thread if she weren't busy with Sudoku. She does it all the time. It's annoying as hell.

It's not a well-designed SUDOKU, because its solution is not deterministic. An alternative version also works:

    6 2 9 5 3 7 8 1 4
    4 7 1 9 2 8 3 5 6
    8 3 5 1 4 6 7 2 9

    1 6 8 2 5 4 9 3 7
    5 4 3 7 8 9 1 6 2
    2 9 7 3 6 1 5 4 8

    7 8 4 6 1 5 2 9 3
    3 5 6 8 9 2 4 7 1
    9 1 2 4 7 3 6 8 5

See, you can vertically switch the colored 7 and 3 in the two 3x3 squares at the same time without violating the rule.

i found out about sudoku in the daily texan a few months ago but just stuffed it in my backpack and never got around to the puzzle until a few weeks ago. then i tried a few in the chronicle. after a misstep on a level 4 made me have to work it over, i tried a level 5 and finished it pretty easily. as far as i can tell, none of the ones in the chronicle involved any guessing. if you looked long enough you could always find one more square to fill in with absolute certainty.

anyway, a few weeks ago i have to fly and as i'm sitting and waiting for the plane, i realize i didn't bring anything to do on the plane. so i go look for a sudoku book and this one says "Impossible Sudoku" so i'm thinking maybe it's like the level 5 stuff from the chronicle so this is what i want. well, i think they literally might be impossible without guessing. i finished all 4 that i started and got them right, but i never did any of them without just having to take a 50/50 shot at the number in one box and then finishing it from there. i think 3 out of the 4 times i got it right and only took one try, the other one i got to the end and had to put the same number twice in a row. luckily, i did it well enough that the other possibility was the correct answer so i got it to work. the cool thing is i do it in pen so i'm writing tiny little numbers as my guesses in the corners and it looks horrible by the end.

the first one i literally started on the flight to dallas (from austin) and was still doing by the time i landed in tulsa about 3 hours later. i had about 10 squares where it was one of two numbers. i don't think you can do these without guessing, which is kind of stupid if you ask me. the one Swoly posted has 28 number pre-filled and these would have like 23-25. anyway, solving about 4 of the impossible ones drained me and i have yet to pick up the book again. maybe once i'm back in houston i'll try more of the chronicle's sudoku.

I know what you mean. I've been hooked for a while.

This is what I do while taking a crap. Now I can't poop without the sudoku book.

It's a myth -- math is NOT required to solve SUDOKU.

In that case, let's put LETTERS instead of numbers. :D I am sure we'll drive a few people crazy: We'll call it SwoLy-Ku.

wnes, I solved it like so:

    6 9 2 5 3 7 8 1 4
    4 1 7 9 2 8 3 5 6
    8 3 5 1 4 6 7 2 9
    1 6 8 2 5 4 9 3 7
    5 4 3 7 8 9 1 6 2
    2 7 9 3 6 1 5 4 8
    7 8 4 6 1 5 2 9 3
    3 5 6 8 9 2 4 7 1
    9 2 1 4 7 3 6 8 5
