1. Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars 2. Allen Iverson and Eric Snow 3. Avery Johnson and Vinnie DelNegro 4. Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley??
I don't think you will find a pair that will top Thomas and Dumars. Actually, add Vinnie Johnson (6'1'') to to that pair and you would no doubt have the best, small backcourt in history.
All of these duos had skills that fed off of each other and complimented one another where as Steve and Cat have similar strengths.
Okay, that's still not small. I guess with Avery it can be considered small, but if your shooting guard is 6'5" or taller, I don't think that is small.
Only one of those backcourts had 2 scorers and they both happenned to be great passers as well. Their size doesn't bother me as much as the fact that they need the ball a lot and don't pass it nearly enough. Maybe they can and Rudy just didn't take advantage of it, but if they play like they did last year we won't go anywhere.
what about Kenny (6'3'') and Mad Max(6'4'')? Not sure about the heights, but wouldn't that make them the same as Wink and Cat?
Gary Payton and Sam Cassell! Gary Payton and Brent Barry! Brent Barry and Ray Allen! Steve Nash and Michael Finley and Nick Van Exel! Eddie Griffin and Maurice Taylor! Backcourt......small compared to opponents...but not successful.
I think that teams with basically two point guards in the backcourt (Philly with A.I. and Snow, Dallas with Nash and Van Excel, Sac-Town with Bibby and Bobby Jackson) are going to become more and more common, especially in the playoffs where the ability to create one's own shot is paramount. I think y'all left out one very talented small backcourt, the one of the early 70's Knicks with the Earl the Pearl (5-9, maybe) and Clyde Frazier (6 ft.). To me, those two were the personification of great small backcourts. You had the cool Frazier and the playground mad skills of Pearl meshed together in perfect harmony. Two championships definitely vault them to the top of the list. I would include Isiah and Dumars, but Dumars is 6-5 I do believe and that would remove them from consideration.
