That's because few of the white players play defense.

Thank you. The qualifiers and caveats that should go along with a study like this should take up the entire Sunday Times Magazine; but you'll never see a single one.

Nice to see Dave Berri, the white Jason Whitlock, doing whatever he can to get his name in the paper again.

Except that has nothing to do with the study. It shows a different rate of foul calling based on the race of the *ref*. That is, white refs call relatively more fouls on black players and vice-versa. That has nothing to do with whether black or white players play differently.

The comp is made equal. They'll say, for every ten white players, you'll get 30 fouls. For every ten black players, you'll get 38.

And there are such myriad reasons behind this, numbering in the hundreds before you could ever get to "Ken Mauer is a racist" or "Leon Wood wants to see a black guy do well."

Ridiculous for the simple fact that
    1) More black player than white like 95%
    2) More white referees

so that mean the chance are that most foul calls will be against a predominantly black player pool and the referees just happen to be white.

No relation whatsover to race bias because they need to compare
    1) black referee + black player VS white referee + white player
    2) black referee + white player VS white referee + black player

they odds are equal in each specific situation.

Now I would be interested in comparing fouls vs specific players (ie media divas) or vs specific teams (large market teams) :D

Did anyone bother to read the article? The difference they noticed was more based on the race of the official.

They say that on average, a black player will have 0.12-0.2 more fouls called on him when there are no black officials than when there are 3 black officials.

No, I read it. There have to be a lot more details than were mentioned in the article for the study to be meaningful. The study might have the necessary details to make the conclusions that the article suggests, but the article doesn't mention any of them.
