Stuck in a dilemma - Got til 9:30am to decide...

Ok, I have about 3 hours to make a pretty big decision and don't know where else to turn for assistance.

I've been at my current job for 2 years, and here are the positives:

    1) I'm reimbursed for my schooling (If I was going full time I'd have about 2 years left, so roughly 45-55 hours).
    2) They pay for my transportation to and from work. I'm able to take the park and ride, thanks to this I fill up my car about twice a month.
    3) It is very laid back, I spend much of my time on here. If I want I could easily waste a whole day on the internet. I could easily take a 2 hour lunch break (today I plan on going to the Rockets open practice during my lunch break, that will definitely take over 1 hour)
    4) Supposedly they are about to give me a promotion here, but it will only add about $1k-2k per year to my income.
    5) My vacation rolls over from year to year here and I get more sick time.

Now this other place has offered me a position and a $14,000 raise.

    1) I'm going to be driving to and from work, meaning I'll be spending roughly $2k more per year on transportation.
    2) They don't reimburse me for my schooling.
    3) This new pay will put me in a new tax bracket, that knocks off about $5k from the $14k raise off the top.
    4) I doubt I'll be able to spend time doing things like this when I should be working.

What is all comes down to after I do the math is.....working at this new place will give me about $3k more per year income, but I'll be driving to and from work, it won't be as laid back, and I'm not sure if I'll have the same job security. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

take the second job and give me the address and a nice referral to the first job :D

seriously what do you do, what type of jiob is it?

maybe taking that second job will help get you advancing more often, but those 2 hour breaks can be lifesavers as well :D

Right now I work for the city of houston, it's hard to get on here and that's another reason I'm hesitant. I'll be doing pretty much the same thing I do here, processing paperwork at my desk.

There are lots of things more important than money.

If your career is not your life (and good for you if it's not) I'd stay where I am.

Some people who's self-worth is wrapped up in their job and making more money would think you were crazy but unless you need the extra cash to support your family or something save yourself the stress.

working for the government - an easy gig - who knew???

It sounds like you have already figured out keeping your current job is the best route. $3,000 is not much and considering you'll actually be working..... :D It a no brainer.

If you're happy now, then why change. Your job should not be your life, it should just help enhance it.

This may not be in time.

However, how much is $3K compared to what you make overall?

Don't discount the 14K base raise, because when you leave for another job, your compensation is always based on what you make in the current job.

I guess the question is: how much do you value quality of life versus career advancement? Believe me i like QOL too... so tough decision.

haha...you're city a worker too. I work for a City as well and it is defenitely more laid back than working for a private company but I am getting tired of it here. I would do what you feel is best in terms of making you feel fullfilled. If you are happy doing nothing and getting paid then that's cool but if you want to be challenged and actually accomplish something then you should probably take the other job.

If I were in your shoes, I would stay there and finish school, especially since they are paying for it. I am only hanging on here because they are very convenient with my school schedule.

Lol, thanks for all of the input guys. I've been in my boss's office since my last post.....overall a $14k raise is giant seeing that I'm only making 22k right now. I also figure when I finish school that will be an extra $4k per year in my pocket at the other job. Of course when I finish school hopefully I'll have more oppurtunities and could leave either job.

Thanks again, I'll post back and let you know what I do.....I'm about to email the lady.....
