I forsee Meluskey becoming the player we regretted getting rid of, just like Curt.

The trade isn't that bad. Holt refuses to go to the bullpen and bites as a starter. Meluskey is a good offensive catcher, but Ausmus should be able to produce at Enron and provides a real catcher for the pitching staff. Cedeno isn't needed. He can't play Centerfield. Cruz has proved his mettle in the majors. Brocail is proven. I think the deal works as long as these two pitchers can handle Enron. It takes a little getting used to.

Nothing better for a rebuilding team than trading away its young talent for mediocre veterans.

I'm starting to think Gerry Hunsicker's name is really Gerry Hunsucker!

Ever since the Randy Johnson deal this guy has done nothing but made horrible deals. Oh yeah, and our owner is a penny pinching b*stard. He says he's going to spend $50-55 million...prove it and do it!

Pimp, 50 to 55 million to finish in 4th. He should look up his neibhors to the north if he wants to see some money spending, albeit Hicks may not have spent it in the right place. Sad thing is, didn't the Astros draw more fans then Texas last year ?

If we would have made this trade a week ago, Hampton would have signed with us.

Ausmus is only signed thru the end of this season when he can opt out of his current deal.Great....Meluskey,Cedeno and Holt for rent-a-catcher,if he isn't yet he soon will be washed up reliever, and a cough cough prospect.

    And why?
Meluskey can't call a good game?He is a switch hitting catcher with power that's something right there. He is five years the junior of "rent-a-catcher";who has just barely gotten his feet wet in the bigs and already the better hitter of the two.I mean isn't that why we felt Ausmus expendable in the first place?Didn't we know before trading Ausmus the first time the drawback with Mitch would be his defense?I just don't understand.

    And why?
Chris Holt doesn't want to be a reliever.Since when do we let a loser like Holt tell us where he wants to be?You'll go to the pen and like it,and just be happy we don't send your butt back to minors where you probably belong.

    And why?
Roger Cedeno can't play center field.Funny how if the Tigers get him he will be their opening day centerfielder.I could forsee the Astros being last in baseball in stolen bases next year:Biggio can't run anymore,Lugo will probably not see enough time to be a real threat, and Bags as good as his baserunning is,best case scenario will only get you twenty to twenty-five.So what does that leave us with?Answer, more of the misadventures of Glen Barker who granted has speed but seems to get thrown out or picked off more than he actually steals the base.

Gerry Hunsiker,Drayton McClane and Larry Dierker not since the three Amigos have I seen a more inept bunch of idiots.

    Some numbers (average, HR, RBI):

    Ausmus - .266, 7, 51
    Melusky - .300, 14, 69

And Melusky got 200 fewer ABs than Ausmus (meaning he'd be around 23 HR and 110 RBI with Ausmus' playing time). That is a whole lot of offense to make up, and don't tell me that Ausmus' ability to "control the running game" is going to make much of a difference in HomeRun Field. I was p*ssed off too when he was traded away, but there's no need to compound the damage by making a second bad trade with the same team.

And BTW, Cedeno is good. Just because he doesn't have a place in the current OF, doesn't mean the Stros should give him away.

I'll refuse to watch the Astros this year if this debacle of a trade goes through.

I agree with everthing you said SamCassell, and IMHO Holt has the talent and pitches to be as good a reliever as Brocail out of the pen.

BobFinn sorry my friend but I disagree with you about Hampton signing here if we'd made that trade a week earlier. To me his decision was more about money than anything else.

Melusky played on a little league field (Enron) while Asmus wasn't in Tiger Stadium.

Do you think Melusky's inability to get the pitching staff's confidence had anything to do with our pitchers performance?

We need a veteran catcher who knows how to handle pitchers and we got one.

Umm . . . is it just me, or is this the worst trade ever? I don't see the stros doing this at all . . .

Meluskey has a lot of potential . . . and he's the most clutch hitter we have had in a while (he's not awesome in clutch, but at least he's something . . . he may at least pop out to center rather than striking out). He sucks at defense, but we can live with that for his bat.

Holt isn't as bad as he's made out to be. He has had dismal run support. Randy Johnson wouldn't be able to win with the crappy run support Holt gets. If the team can rally behind him and put bat on ball, he could be a 15 game winner.

Cedeno has potential, like Meluskey, but not as much. He seems to be kindof the Mo Taylor of the Astros. He's got speed, quickness and pop, but he doesn't seem to give 100% very often. He's also battled with injuries a lot, but I feel he will round out into a valuable part of this club.

So why would the Astros trade that (above) for this:

Brad Ausmus is one of the better defensive catchers in the league, and he's a clutch hitter, but he's inconsistent and is nearing the end of his career.

Doug Brocail . . . I'm not even gonna waste the time or bandwidth

Prospect: this is the lone valuable thing . . . everyone needs pitching prospects, but this guy had better be a young Pedro Martinez if we're giving up all that for him.

I don't see why the Astros would even consider this . . . hopefully it can just pass them by . . .

Its no longer a rumor. From ESPN:

The Tigers filled on of their offseason needs Monday, completing a six-player deal with Houston that brings outfielder Roger Cedeno to Detroit and sends catcher Brad Ausmus back to Houston.

The Astros trade Cedeno, catcher Mitch Meluskey and right-hander Chris Holt to the Tigers for Ausmus and right-handed relievers Doug Brocail and Nelson Cruz.

The move gives the Tigers the leadoff they've been seeking. Cedeno, injured for much of last season, hit .282 with 25 stolen bases in 74 games for the Astros.

Holt was 8-16 with a 5.35 ERA in 32 starts; Meluskey batted .300 with 14 home runs and 69 RBI in 117 games.

The trade marks the second time the Tigers have dealt Ausmus to Houston. He led the American League in percentage of runners thrown out attempting to steal last season.

Brocail has been one of the top setup relievers in the American League the last two seasons.

SSG, the reason Hampton wanted out of Houston in the first place was because we traded Asmus. They are very good freinds. He would have signed here for less.

Vengence, Asmus, at 31, end of career? I think not.

    Here's the info:

Ausmus, 31, appeared in 150 games for the Tigers in 2000, the most ever by a Detroit catcher. He batted .266 (139x523) while setting career highs for games played, at-bats, hits, runs (75) and walks (69). He also tied his career high with 25 doubles.

Defensively, Ausmus threw out 32-of-74 baserunners attempting to steal and his 43.2 percent success rate was tops in the American League and second in the majors only to St. Louis' Mike Matheney (51.1%).

Brocail, 33, was 5-4 with a 4.09 ERA over 49 games for Detroit in 2000. In four seasons as the primary setup man for the Tigers, he compiled a 17-14 record over 240 games with a 3.06 ERA, ranking him among the top setup men in AL.

The 2001 season marks the beginning of a second tour with the Astros for both Ausmus and Brocail. Ausmus was first acquired by Houston on December 10, 1996 in a nine-player trade that sent then-Astro Brocail to the Tigers. In two seasons with the Astros (1997-98), Ausmus batted .268 (224x837) with 35 doubles, 10 homers and 89 RBI. Brocail played for Houston from 1995-96 after he was acquired from San Diego on December 28, 1994. During those two seasons, he compiled a 7-9 record (59 games) with a 4.35 ERA.
Cruz, 28, posted a 5-2 record over 27 games with a 3.07 ERA for the Tigers after his contract was purchased from Triple A Toledo on June 25, 2000. Opponents batted just .205 (18x88) in his first 11 outings, and he sported a 2-0 record with a 1.86 ERA (4ER/19.1IP) in the month of July, striking out 18 while walking only two.

I just think Meluskey and Holt for Ausmus,Brocail and Cruz sounds more fair, but what's done is done and here's hoping it turns out for the best.I just hope the Astros aren't just grasping at straws.I for one hope our local news has some reactionary sound bites from Biggio,Bagwell,Reynolds and Lima all sayin they're happy about the move.

I guarantee you they are happy to have Asmus back, plus we get some quality middle relief, which killed us last year. We had a plethera of outfielders, trading Cedeno opens the door for Berkman. I think its a great trade for us. How many more excuses could Holt have?
