here is the link http://www.astros.com/548546.htm The Houston Astros announced on Tuesday that the club has signed first baseman Jeff Bagwell to a five-year, $85 million contract extension beginning in 2002 and continuing through 2006 with a club option for the 2007 season Overall a great day for Houston sports. ------------------ Principal Skinner to the school hamster after sending it into a snowstorm to rescue himself and the children"Nibbles, you made it!Now chew through my ball sack" Just some more brilliance brought to you courtesy of The Simpsons
So, A-Rod got TRIPLE what Jeff's getting? Wow. ------------------ "I have a DREAM.........his name's Hakeem." DREAMer's Rocket Page
Not really triple. ARod got a ten year contract for $252 million. Bags got a five year deal worth $85. ARod's deal averages $25 million per year, Bags' averages $17 million per year. So really, it's only $8 million (about 47%) more. You can't compare total value of the contract since the time period is different. (For example, if we both make $36,000 per year, you can't say that I make twice as much as you do just because my earnings over 10 years is twice as much as your earnings over five years). ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page

Very, very happy and excited about this. 1.) We got Bagwell in for the rest of his great career. and 2.) the Astros can spend money! ------------------ Sometimes you gotta do the next best thing!
Well, compared to what triple Bagwell's salary would be, "only" $8 million is a bargain. A million here and a million there, and pretty soon we're talking about some real money. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page

Yeah, but now $30 million per year is tied up in Biggio and Bagwell and their self-imposed salary limitation is $55 million. So, now they have to be able to sign EVEYRONE else for $25 million. What if Biggio doesn't really recover from the knee injury? Don't get me wrong. I love Bagwell and I'm glad the Astros kept him, but now how do they go out and bring in quality pitching depth (hell, starting pitching for that matter) for example? Is Drayton going to expand his payroll to $80 million to compensate for Bagwell? Doubtful. ------------------ The way to use life is to do nothing through acting, The way to use life is to do everything through being. - Lao-Tzu

Not too mention the best hitter in the game, and the best Ribbie producer in the game. And the best heart of the order w/ Nomar, Everett, Manny, and Bichette. But the Stros really shot themselves in the foot this offseason. Got rid of some outstanding young talent in Meleusky. Ausmus is over the hill. Stros cant really afford Bagwell. They should have traded him to the Red Sox for some more young talent. Who knows, in five years the Stros could have become amazingly young and good. 55% of a team's total salary spent on two aging players is not a good sign. Perhaps the Sox shouldnt have traded him in the first place... ------------------ The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. I have to echo Jeff's thoughts. I love the Stros re-signing Bagwell, but I wonder where the club is headed. They seem hell-bent on mediocrity - Bagwell, Biggio, Hidalgo and Alou will keep them respectable, and the bullpen is much improved. But the Stros lack of starting pitching outside of Elarton and maybe Reynolds is going to mean a number of 12 to 9 losses. Sox fans: you overpaid for Manny! You'd have been better off spending that cash on Mussina. ------------------ "Thirty-seven?" -Randall, Clerks www.clutchtown.com
Nomar-The Red Sox have very little young talent. If they had the Braves' or Yankees' farm system, I think a deal might have gotten done. But basically, they have 3 decent pitchers, not drop dead prospects, and they wouldn't have done away with all three, and a good 1B prospect (Stenson). No way the Red Sox would part with all 4 of them, and even if they would I'm not sure the Stros would do it. If the Astros were to trade Bags, Ward/Berkman would be the next 1B. Stenson would then be useless. The middle of the Red Sox order is going to be tough. Nomar-Manny-Everett-Bichette in the 3-6 slots, to go along with guys like O'Leary and Varitek, and that 1B who I'm forgetting the name. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. Nike- your right. The Sox's farm system isnt exactly loaded. But Ohka, Soo-Woo Kim and Paxton Crawford are three extremely talented players. Sometimes Yankees prospects are overhyped by the media. Stenson is already traded. But I think that we would have traded you guys Wilton Veras and 2 of the pitchers. Veras could start for the Stros next year. Also, Sam, Dan Duke offered Mussina more money than the Yankees. Mussina turned it down. Prior to the A-Rod signing, i would have agreed with you. But After that, all former sense of value was thrown out the window. P.S. For those of you who think the Sox's farm system sucks, remember this name. Tony Blanco, 3B supa stud. A couple of things I am very happy about. Bagwell will be an Astro and we will not have to hear about the rumors of him playing for the Red Sox. (At least not for another 6 years)!! Sorry Red Sox fans. I think we need to look at trading Darryl Ward and get a quality starting pitcher. ------------------ Titan's fanatic!!!! We should have traded Biggio and Bagwell for young talent? Why? So the young talent could blossom and produce until we couldn't afford them anymore, forcing us to trade them and look for more young talent? ------------------ Hey, I've got a new signature! 302
Definitely Nomar, Blanco shows a lot of potential and looks to fit right in with the Sox once he is ready. Nike, Brian Daubach is the 1st baseman your thinking of. Sammy, You said the Sox paid too much for Manny. Ramirez is getting 20 million a year, while Bags is getting 17. Now if you look at numbers then you actually paid too much for Jeff. Here are their stats. Player G HR RBI Runs Avg OBP SLG OPS Manny Ramirez 717 186 632 524 .322 .416 .611 1.027 Jeff Bagwell 792 197 624 639 .304 .436 .586 1.022 Alex Rodriguez 725 184 574 608 .315 .381 .575 .956 Go Sox! ------------------ Ceo of the Walt Williams fan club. And yet the Sox are the Yankees b****! I dont know why u Astros fans are getting happy. Astors aint winning aything anytime soon. And I could bat better then Bagwell in the postseason. Of course the Astros and Bagwell wont have to worry about postseason dilemas, because they wont be going there to begin with. ------------------ SUCK POLICE!!!!!!
