    Nets close to Collins deal
    Friday, February 1, 2008

MIAMI – The Nets are close to making a deal involving a Jason, but it's not Kidd.

They are set to acquire athletic 6-foot-10 forward Stromile Swift from the Memphis Grizzlies for Jason Collins, league sources said. The deal was being worked on Thursday night and could be finalized today or sometime over the weekend.

Swift is averaging 6.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 35 games for the Grizzlies, who suspended the eighth-year big man for one game earlier this week for conduct detrimental to the team.

The offensively-challenged Collins, who helped the Nets reach two NBA finals and has anchored their defense in recent years, has been a Net since 2001. He was their starting center until earlier this season when coach Lawrence Frank decided to go with second-year big man Josh Boone.

Acquired along with Richard Jefferson and Brandon Armstrong in a 2001 draft night deal with Houston for Eddie Griffin, Collins is averaging 1.3 points and 2.1 rebounds.

I thought Memphis wanted to play small and up tempo. And they decide to trade Swift for Collins?

From #2 overall to under all the rest, I mean Jason Collins? Somewhere Yinka Dare must be chuckling... :D

Swift needs to learn to play decent NBA basketball first.

Sucks for Swift but it shows that he has some value…more than enough to just be thrown into the Battier deal and not receive anything back…a #2 pick..something.

So the Rockets could've had Rudy Gay and Jason Collins.

A team with a small-ball, fast tempo philosophy trading him away for Jason Collins indicates value to you? I read that differently.

New Jersey may be primed for a second half tank job if they go through with the Jason Kidd trade. Play Swift a bunch of minutes and try to drive up his trade value.

I always thought this team is actually the best fit with Stro. I can already imagine Kidd dishing to Stro for easy buckets. That is, if Kidd stays in Jersey. Kidd won't make him an all-star but I bet he has his best season if Kidd stays.

Stro sucks. The guy has the talent and potential but really never gave the effort or worked on developing his game

This should be his last stop

Do you think Collins can nab you at least a 2nd round draft pick? I do. My point is Swift does not have negative value. You can still get something for him....

He probably fits better with a Jason Kidd offense...too bad he is leaving soon too.
