The oldest living Senator has apparently passed away. i saw it on television and see it on the ABC News site but don't have a link yet. As soon as I get one, I'll post it. CK http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...&e=1&u=/ap/20030627/ap_on_go_co/obit_thurmond
Man that sucks. Met the dude in DC in the summer of 1988. Worst hair transplant I have ever seen in my life, but he was pretty friendly to our family of Texans. Guess it was that southin hospitality or something. 100 years!!
In 1941, Thurmond was a circuit court judge. He presided over the trial of a seventeen year old black farmer, Samuel Osborne, who shot and killed his white employer with a shotgun in self defense when the man attacked Samuel while the young black man was sleeping. He threatened Samuel with a .32-caliber pistol and a club with which he was known to beat his black employees. Despite the fact that the Supreme Court had already ruled that the exclusion of blacks from juries was unconstitutional, Thurmond allowed Osborne to be tried for murder by an all-white jury and later sentenced him to death. As governor of South Carolina, he opposed the integration of black and white troops in the U.S. army. When Strom Thurmond ran for president in 1948, he ran on the 'Sates Rights' campaign, which was a Cival War era term used as a euphemism of 'White Power.' His campaign slogan was 'Segregation Forever'. When Harry Truman insisted that the Democratic Party abandon racism in all forms, Thurmond left the party, ran as independent and eventually became a Republican. In 1957, he filibustered for over 24 hours, one of the longest filibusters in US history, against the passage of the Civil Rights act, which would give equal rights to Americans of all races. He was an avid supporter of Richard Nixon and used his racist stance to rally support for Nixon in southern states. Thurmond has repeatedly voted against laws that would give rights to blacks, gays, or women. like i said, won't miss him one bit. how's that for "superior."
I don't remember including anything about Strom Thurmond in what I said. so kindly take your and stick them.
100, its amazing that people manage to live this long. He must have seen a bunch of stuff. I have no clue on who he is but rip
If this man was so great, why did Trent Lott, the most powerful man in the Senate, resign because he said America would have been better off with Strom Thurmond as president? Because Thurmond ran on a segregationist platform. The man is dead so may he RIP but stop portraying him as a saint. Thurmond was a racist b*stard in his younger days.
Truth hurts doesn't it Nomar. Everything he said about Thurmond is true. Now I don't wish death on anybody or anything like that but I along with countless others won't miss this man. Don't try to make him look like an angel.
I hate to see anyone pass away and I feel sorry for his family and friends. With that said, I thought his stance on Civil Rights was pathetic. RIP Strom
From the link that Castor provided: His second wife, former beauty queen Nancy Moore, was 44 years younger than Thurmond when they were married in 1968. Thurmond was 68 when their first child, Nancy, was born. The couple had three other children before separating in 1991: Strom Jr., Juliana and Paul. His daughter Nancy died in 1993 after being struck by a car. So this blonde bombshell was 22 years old when she married this 66 year-old??!! Ole Strom had nothing on Hugh Hefner, it seems. Now I may get blasted for this, but I honestly want to know why a 22 year old girl would marry someone this old OTHER than for their money. I cannot imagine that someone old enough to be her grandfather is considered by her to be "sexy". Also, wondering how Strom and Strom Jr did in father-son events compared to the rest of Strom Jr. classmates. I can see it now... Finishing dead last in the sack race, for the 3rd year in a row is 16 year old Strom Jr and his old, old, OLD man Strom Sr who is a ripe 88!! Shallow Nancy probably left him in '91 because she never thought he would hold on this long, seriously dampening her plans of getting his money. Or maybe she grew tired of geezers...geez.
