Carrianne Howard dreamed of designing video games, so she enrolled in a program at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, a for-profit college part-owned by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Her bachelor’s degree in game art and design cost $70,000 in tuition and fees. After she graduated in December 2007, she found a job that paid $12 an hour recruiting employees for video game companies. She lost that job a year later when her department was shuttered.

These days, Howard, 26, makes her living in a way that doesn’t require a college diploma: by stripping at the Lido Cabaret, a topless club in Cocoa Beach, Florida. “I didn’t know what else to do,” she says. “I’ve got a worthless degree. It’s like I didn’t attend school at all.”

There was a thread about devry. Maybe this should be a warning sign.

That's pretty much the story of higher education in a nutshell these days.

For-profit higher education. The Fed really has to crack down on these institutions. Here's a great Frontline on the For-Profit School scam...

    College Inc.

You make it seem as if Goldman is the evil doer here when in fact it is the college recruiters and society that tells you a degree is essential in life. Goldman does God's work and should be shown appreciation for giving folks like Carriane Howard even the opportunity to attend college.

The story is drawing a distinction between typical colleges/universities and the ones that advertise on day-time TV. This isn't about the University of Houston...or UT...or even private institutions like Rice or Baylor.

Gee, who would've thought that her degree at the Art Institute would be worthless?

The scary thing about the story is that she is saving up money to go back to school. Yep, a business degree is going to solve all of your problems, honey.

A little research into the industry may have helped first:
    a) programming games pays pretty poorly, because lots of geeks want to do it.
    b) game design is something some people get to do as a progression from programming games, or if they start their own company by making a game
    c) getting a game design degree without the basics of programming puts you into the position of trying to break into a tough industry without experience or a portfolio. Why would someone hire a newbie game designer to run a multi-million dollar project?

What she doesn't understand, b-school isn't equipped to fix.

That being said, there are too many universities in this country and too many people with degrees. At some point, the competition is going to get ugly.

"Well, the world needs ditch diggers too, son!"

...and what if there was another student at the same college who went on to design map levels and building art for cod:mw2. like everything in life, it's about your passion for what you are doing.

Carriane Howard doesn't strike me as someone who is really into video games...

Yep, yep, and yep. This is girl is an idiot, several times over. I don't feel any sympathy for someone who forks over $70,000 without an inkling of what kind of education she's investing in or what she plans to do with it afterward.

I wish I could make six figures shaking my ass a few hours a week, like many strippers are able to do. Maybe if she goes to business school she will learn about efficient allocation of resources and embrace being in the adult entertainment industry.

I don't think there's a such thing as "too many people with degrees". It would be great if everyone had higher education.

People need to stop looking at that piece of paper as if it's some golden ticket to a great career. You must prove yourself first, academic success is not enough.

    Bingo.

There is a reason why internships and other opportunities exist in most fields. While you are studying you must get your foot into the door early in order to increase your own chances of landing a job soon after school.

I respectfully disagree. In the past, when a person held a degree, it was an indicator that they had some measure of intelligence, initiative, commitment to a long-term goal, and competent training within their chosen field. Not everyone can have those traits: the law of averages say so.

As my grandfather used to say, "Think how dumb the average person is. Now, by definition, half the people are dumber than that". To have everyone with a higher education, you would have to end up teaching top-to-bottom, which inevitably means adapting to the lowest common denominator. The degree must be diluted to compensate, and is thus, devalued.

While there is some truth to this now, the value of a college degree was that it was a form of proof. But if everyone has a college degree, it just becomes high school v2.0.

GlenRice already knows that for-profit universities are a risky business, that's why he's working a little bit on the side too, as a hustler of used hair gel.

Its sad the people are actually sitting around watching TV and then see those Devry/ITT/Art Design College ads for video game design and then think "wow I like to play video games, let's give them a call."

How fcking stupid are people these days?

I remember seeing one of those ads and the tagline was like "Are you a gamer? Time to step up to the nex level!"

Seriously you deserve to end up $70k in the hole if you're dumb eough to fall for that scam.

Talked to a guy yesterday who spent 6 years trying to get a degree in architecture from The Ohio State University. Out of frustration, he quit 19 hours shy of a degree. Went to DeVry for a couple of years, got a job with a Dutch micro-chip firm and lives in a great big house. Can it really be that bad?

Like most things in life. It's not about what you know, rather who you know.
