Anyone here a strategy player whether it be Age of Empires or Risk? There is web browser strategy game I used to play a couple years ago call Tribal Wars. Semi in depth. If you do play strats then you will probably get addicted. It is a MMO. Build up your city. Tag up with buddies and take over other players cities. One thing I do appreciate about this web browser game is the fact that unlike other web browser games, you don't have to buy anything to stay ahead of the game. (like those other games buy this thing to make you stronger or faster) Tribal Wars Now if you do try it out, make sure you are in World 36 (with me) and choose SW region (southwest...) to get as close to my city as possible.
Axis & Allies was a great game. It's too bad that it takes forever to finish. Back in school, we would play this for hours.
I was always a fan of the civilization series of computer games. For board games, the "Battlefield" series is fun, but the Settlers of Catan is the absolute best strategy game I have ever played. Long, though.
Axis and Allies was fun, but I got bored because I started to win every single freakin' time playing as Japan, which I thought was ridiculously overpowered.
You were playing against some dummies, then. I typically won as the U.S. I'd just stockpile for the first dozen or so turns.
I used to play Risk with my buddies all the time, back before the dinosaurs and the interwebs, and we had a great time. Illegal alliances FTW! Now? I'm waiting for Starcraft II.
Board Games: Monopoly, Risk, Axis and Allies, Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, Sequence Computer Games: Civ series, Total War series, Age of Empires series, Star Craft, Command and Conquer Series, Rise of Nations
Love it. I have it ready for Voodoo's next trip to Austin, but we always get busy drinking and hitting the lake when the weather is good. So many social engagements.... so little time. Risk is always good, have that ready too. Sounds good, though, OP. I may give it a whirl. Is it mac friendly? I had another friend send me a link to some free online strategy games lately (that has Axis and Allies) and found that while they tout mac compatibility through java, they don't support it, and it never worked for me.
There was a thread about Strategy games like a week ago. I play Company of Heroes, Age Of Empires (not as much anymore).
Some random thoughts: Settlers of Catan was a favorite, but I honestly only played it a couple dozen times or so. Axis and Allies was good for a long time, but eventually my play group became stagnant. Well, the game does: eventually you 'know' the starting moves and how to take advantage of anything but certain set offenses/defenses. I get obsessive about things, I literally played every country by myself for hours and hours after school to practice/get a leg up on the others... unfortunately the bastards were copy cats. My favorite experience with the Axis and Allies was listening to some guy in college claim that he never loses at the game. We talked for a bit, and he insisted he could not lose; he was just that good at it. Played a group game with people on the floor. He lost, blamed his partner. Played him 1 on 1. Crushed him. (I recall he didn't take out my navy in either ocean... no idea if I was the Axis or Allies, but I was flabbergasted at how bad he was.) It has been years since I've played, but I remember Japan being too late to the party to matter the majority of the time. (Not that the Axis couldn't win, but it is like black/white in chess.) Risk was fun. But, again... my group was lame. 2-3 people would go 'all in' for Australia and everyone else would fight over the rest of the continents. So, we'd always have a person or 2 knocked out of the game really early. If only 1 person 'went all in', they'd generally win the game. I might give Tribal Wars a go... Would I be going SW to be easy prey? I looked at mybrute, but I didn't see any depth in that game at all. Not sure why people play it?
good article about settlers of catan here: http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/magazine/17-04/mf_settlers been meaning to try it out
No, but this is the site I was referring to above. They have axis and allies, but I couldn't get the java applet to load properly. Mb cuz of resolution or dual monitors, but got no support from the guy because I'm on a mac. good times. https://www.gametableonline.com/
The graphics on this one look waaaaay better than the one I played in elementary school in the mid eighties. In fact, I think the one I played was text only.
I actually owned Risk on PC at one point, I don't remember it being anything close to fun whereas I do have some fond memories of the board game. If the disk had an online component it would probably worth it though. Civilization though, if you haven't played that series you have to set aside 2 days and give it a try.
