First off I got there and filled out an application, they made a copy of my license and social security card, all routine/standard procedures. Then I was led into an office, apart from the main area where I am guessing the rest of the employees are stationed. The person was dressed nicely in a suite and tie and friendly but serious. We both sat down and he perused my resume for a minute or so, then asked the person who recruited me to the interview to create a file. The door closed and he basically only asked what my career goal was. I briefly explained, and then he asked how much I was currently making which I honestly told him. He had a kind of arrogant reaction to what I told him as he stood and began “pitching” the job to me. It seemed like he was trying to sell the position to me. He began to break down the pay procedure and minor details of the job but seemed more like he was pitching the job to me rather than interviewing me and trying to get to know what my skills, strengths/weaknesses are. He did not ask a single question about what I am doing now, what I’ve done before, how/why I would be a good fit for the position (common interview questions). I haven’t been on too many interviews before, this is probably my 10th or so, if that, but this is the first one where the hiring person was trying to “sell” the position rather than trying to see if I am qualified for the it. Anyone ever experience this before? Is this semi-normal or am I correct to be suspicious? The other reason I am skeptical about it is the income. Once he completed the breakdown of what I would be making, it came out to over $400,000 for a year’s work. This just seems way too good to be true, especially in the home building market, with all the foreclosures and so forth. Just wanted to get some feedback from you all. Anyone ever been to an interview where you were being “sold” the job rather than the other way around where the candidate is supposed to be selling him/her self?
If it is too good to be true, it "USUALLY" is. You can try to find out more about them through other people or maybe the internet.
I didn't think it was too strange until you got the part about the $400,000. I take it this is a job with highly variable pay, either commission-based or entrepreneurial. It could be vey lucrative for you or pay you next to nothing depending on your skill and the market (and whether or not it is an out-and-out scam). And, you probably don't cost the company anything unless you generate revenue for them. So, that's probably why he's pitching instead of probing. You take all the risk, the company takes very little, and he could have 100 people just like you doing the same thing and still be happy if only 5 amounted to anything. You haven't told us enough to know if it is a scam. But, you're income if you took this job would likely be a total crapshoot.
you say homemarket? Is it 100% commission? I wouldn't bother. 100% commission = no risk if you don't work out.
Anyone else think it's strange that they got a copy of his driver's license and Social Security card when he's not even an employee of the place?
They shouldn't be getting a copy of your social security card until they offer you a job and you have accepted. This sound fishy on so many levels.
No cost involved, which is what I was waiting to hear b/c like I said it sounded too good to be true. I've been to job interviews in the past where they did the same thing so I thought it was routine but worried about it afterwards since it was a really strange "interview". Yeah they build custom homes...I found several companies with the same name online but no website or companies in Texas. Their location I went to is listed in the BBB but not as a member and they don't have any info on them. Well, its a design job/project management, where you get to design/manage the building of one house in your first 3 months, and you get 20% of the cost of the construction (not the sale of the house) followed by a one week paid vacation ($4,000). DUring that vacation, they evaluate you and if you're success you're offered a 1-4 year contract. The next 3 months you take on 2 houses, get 20%, another week vacation with $8,000 bonus, so on and so forth. He didn't mention any selling or myself putting any money down. He just said that they were a religious company and wanted to "spread the wealth" and even quoted a passage from the Bible about spreading gold to God's sheep or something.
They must have build many houses then, surely you can find out from the county office if they actually build them.
This sounds bad on so many levels. But you should pursue it and report back to us on how it turns out.
sounds like a pyramid/commission thing sir. Plus I'm guessing you haven't heard of the company before you went in for an interview.... I would avoid man, but good luck whatever you do.
It sounds a lot like my interview with DS-Max. I went and they didn't really ask me much about myself, just trying to tell me what I'd be doing. They sold it as marketing, but it was basically door to door sales. After the first interview, they do a second one the day later, where they take you on the sales call. It is a total scam.
There is no sales involved, just design/project management. He gave me a week to think about it but I don't think I am going to risk my steady income for something that sounds so fishy.
