'Straight Outta Compton,' 20 Years Later
    By Christopher Johnson

Day to Day, December 4, 2007 - The cover photo for Straight Outta Compton says it all.

It's taken from the viewpoint of a man who's likely caught an official N.W.A beat-down. Staring up, he sees a circle of six dead-serious-looking young men.

True, Ice Cube does sport a Jheri curl — that's kind of funny. More sobering, though, is Eazy-E pointing a handgun down right at your face, ready to finish you off. The message? You stepped into Compton, fool.

It's been more than two decades since the south Los Angeles rap crew N.W.A dropped the album Straight Outta Compton. A special 20th-anniversary CD comes out today. Back in the late '80s, that gun-wielding, gang-banging, cop-shooting disc quickly turned N.W.A into a hip-hop household name.

N.W.A wasn't the world's first gangsta rap act. And it wasn't necessarily the baddest. But it convinced many people otherwise.

don't hate on Ice Cube cause he's got the most talent of all NWA.

He went Platinum and he didn't have to sell out

I think Dr. Dre and the 80 million records he has sold want to argue this point with you.

Ice Cube didn't sell out? I like Ice Cube but come on, dude totally sold out. He is the complete opposite of the "gangsta" that he used portray.

That new Ice Cube track is weak -- he should focus on the next sequel in the Are we ____________ yet? trilogy.

it is obvious that some of you have NEVER listened to the first NWA album when it first came out and weren't even born when Ice Cube dropped AmeriKKa's most wanted and Death Certificate.

When Cube left NWA it made HUGE news, that paved the door for Dre to leave too.

Ice Cube didn't sell out, he grew up.

He had a family and wanted to make movies that his children could watch, theres nothing wrong with that. Ice T was one of the hardest rappers back in the day and now he is on VH1's I Love the ___'s.

Snoop Doggy Dog has a reality show about his family life, are you going to say he sold out because he doesn't live the "gangsta" life?

People change and their proirities od as well.

dre is the better producer, no contest.
    but cube the better rapper.

remove Snoop Dogg from the Chronic, it wouldn't sell half as much.
Dre has a good eye for talent.

I like Cube he likes to say f** the haters and does what he wants to. some of you guys want the rappers to stay rapping and live in the hood.

its like the U2 Fans who think they sold out after Joshua Tree.
