My parents live in Bellaire and absolutely refuse to leave for a hurricane, so I was wondering what could be done to keep them as safe as possible in their home. Their house didn’t flood during Allison, so I think they’re okay in that respect. The place is also mostly brick and the roof is in good shape, so I think it would stand up well. The only upgrade I could think of was the windows.

They have builder’s grade windows, which apparently are the worst – only 1/8 thick. I’ve been told the building code doesn’t even allow these windows for new construction. So anyway, I looked into getting them storm windows.

I got one quote from Gulf Coast Windows - $11,000.00! My second quote was about ½ that, but the guy seemed a little shady and didn’t speak highly of his product. Another guy didn’t even want to come out to give a quote.

What I’m wondering is, do you think that storm windows are really necessary, given my parents’ location and their current glass? If so, could you recommend anyone who could deliver good windows with good service at a reasonable price? Finally, for those of you who already have storm windows, do they look good?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
