Riding on Fatty's coattails: Woolworth's TG&Y Best (not Best Buy) - if anyone remembers, the only one I knew of was over near 1960/Jones in the parking lot of the Target - it was sort of like Service Merchandise Joskie's - My mom loved this place - I believe it was over near the Galleria? Chess King - My first pair of parachute pants came from here K-Mart - always had cheap 45s Weiner's - we were poor, so we always got our school clothes there
There was another "Best" (Best Products, Inc.) that was behind Almeda Mall, the big quirk with the Best stores was the broken appearance of the building. The one near Almeda was "crumbling" bricks at the top of the front of the place.
I remember this place!! I used to always shop there as well. Sad to say, that was one of the highlights of my childhood.

Just thought of a few more: Montgomery Ward Command Performance - not really a store, but I used to get my hair cut here Miller's Outpost - place to go to get your Levis ESPIRIT - didn't shop there, but remember hanging out there to look at cure girls Babbage's - only place near my house where I could get games for my Commodore 64 Spencer Gifts - the ultimate crude gag store
I saw one of these last summer at a mall in Sweden and I mentioned to my wife that we used to have them in Houston.
Wow, I used to live at Record Rack and the Sound Waves around the corner from it on Westheimer. I only went to Dream Merchant once or twice I think, but recall it.
