please...sombody help me...i'll leave my comp for a couple hours...come back and there will be 15-20 pop-ups.

i've tried PestPatrol (free version) and it says i have Purity Scan, Alexa, and eAcceleration as the "pests".

norton antivirus doesn't come up with anything (though some people have said that they have got emails from me with the Netsky virus. oh, and the symantec security check for known trojans and virus' comes up saying that i am clean.

i don't know what to do.

spybot says i'm clean too. ugh.

any ideas? i don't have much money to spend...just a poor kid at a small university.

Google Toolbar

Get rid of GAIN and all that other crap. Download Adaware to get rid of the rest of your spyware.

If you run your browser through Mozilla, I don't think you will be having problems with pop-ups.

This is free and it works great.

http://endpopups.com/

It keeps a running tab:

"Popup Manager has blocked 2,294 Popups for you.
Imagine how annoying 2,294 Popups would have been."

I think either would work although I am using 1.6 (but only at home).

1. Download Spybot Search and Destroy, then update it and run it.
2. Download Adaware, update it and run it.
3. Download Mozilla Firefox and use it instead of MSIE, which sucks ass

You didn't actually send it -- the way the virus (and damn near ALL of those mass-emailing viruses) works is by infecting a target machine, finding a bunch of email addresses on the computer (from address books and temporary internet files), then randomly selecting one, making it the "sender", randomly selecting another, making it the receiver, then sending an email with the virus. Therefore, when it says it's from "drpepperlover123@hotmail.com", it didn't really come from him. It came from someone who happened to have that email address on his computer somewhere. The only way to know where it really came from is by checking out the IP address of the sender, and even that won't give you much info.

It will also send emails saying you send a virus that contain the virus. Very "sneaky". There's nothing you can do about it . . .

Okay, the FCC and FTC better alter the focus of their attention from stopping illegal download **** and focus on this annoying popup spam crap.

For the 2 years I've had this computer, I've rarely had a problem (which is amazing considering it's a Dell). Anyway, I would occasionally get some popups and once or twice they would automatically install on my comp (especially GAIN Gator crap. I ****ing HATE it!!!). Well, then there would be some unusual spyware that would take up 99% of my system speed, so I eventually got rid of those once I figured out the source of it.

So fast forward to last night. I quit using IE because of the annoying popups and switched to Mozilla-powered Netscape 7 with built-in popup blocker; a godsend. SO there are only a few sites that fail to load on Netscape so I still use IE for it. One of those sites has TONS of popups and fake 'security warnings'. I always click no. I also close ALL of those windows (of course they popback up saying 'OOPS YOU FORGOT TO CLICK'). Or those ones that ask if you would like to make 'www.xxxrimjobxxx.com' your home page. Or even those ones that trick you into clicking yes when you meant no. I swear to god these companies who have these popups need to be fined and punished. There needs to be an end to it.

Anyway, somehow one of these automatically installed which contained a Trojan (go figure). Within minutes I had popups. I spent all day trying to get rid of the 5 or so programs that installed. I thought I was successful (it meant going into Task Manager and manually End Process them. That way I could delete the program stuck in my Program Files). Well, the popups still didn't stop and I tried Spybot I had and it failed. I then went ahead with Google Toolbar. Yes, it blocks (GOD DMANIT ANOTHER ONE JUST POPPED UP @!$U!@#)*(% @OJHFOJWEF) the popups, but it still 'grays' the active window. And it still takes up processing time which GREATLY slows the computer down. So since I had the GT installed at 6, (oh for chrissake, it's taking 1 minute 7 seconds for IE to even open and this is a 1.6GHz P4) 88 popups have been 'blocked'. And make it two more (I just heard the sound).

ALL of these popups are occuring when I'm not even using IE.

**** spammers.

Dude, Mooch...I've had all those problems before and couldn't agree more. Now, though, I'm using Mozilla Firefox (and Firebird before it), and after taking a little time to customize the hell out of my browser with the endless extensions and subsequent options, I have had zero difficulty viewing any web page and absolutely no problems with stupid sneaky websites. Toss in AdAware and buying (ahem - cracking) it's AdWatch function, I have totally forgotten what a horrible world the internet really is.

What I mean to say is, you've done the right thing by phasing out IE. I still think FireFox would be a better choice than Netscape 7, but it's not too far behind.

So for everyone else: If you're reading this post on Internet Explorer, let me chime in with even more praise for Mozilla Firefox. Don't be scared of it. It won't screw anything up. And when you do it, make sure to check out http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/ for tons of ways to personalize your internet experience. You won't regret it!!!
