This totally sucks. Yesterday, I noticed my biz debit/credit card wasn't in my wallet. I didn't think too much of it because I thought maybe it fell out at home or something. Apparently not.

I login today to my online banking and there are four charges for $1500+ ALL to gambling places. ****!!!

Fortunately, the bank has fraud protection and we'll get all our money back, but nearly $6k just gone from some dumb **** who stole the card.

    Sucks.

I was going to cut you in on the winnings. ;)

Just kidding man...it's such a pain, but thank God for fraud protection. My card was "accidentally" given to the wrong person at a bar about six years ago and that person promptly put ~$500 on it. Luckily, I had all that money back within 48 business hours.

Even without fraud protection, isn't the max 50 bucks? Or am I totally clueless on this?

There may be a difference between debit and credit cards wrt fraud protection, ie debit may not be protected while credit cards are protected (by law iirc).

That's my understanding, but debit card you need pass codes which gives it some protection.

I can attest to bank debit/credit cards having fraud protection. About 2 years ago, someone stole my data assumingly from one of those fake magnetic strip readers and made a counterfeit card, then promptly withdrew $400 in California(I live in Austin). My bank called me about it fortunately and I did get all of it back.

I got a call the other morning from Chase saying that someone had attempted to make a purchase with my card in San Francisco for $600 bucks at an electronics store.

Needless to say, I put a hold on the purchase and cancelled the card.

    Sigh.

That totally sucks...Sorry to hear about that...Was that the only thing taken? If you suspect more, you may want to put a fraud alert on your credit. You can just call Equifax and they alert the other two agencies...My data got stolen a while back...

I have a hypothetical question...let's say that somebody used their own credit card to purchase a high end item, then called that day to report their card as "stolen", and got the purchase back. Let's also say that the store from which this item was purchased didn't ask for an I.D. How does the credit card company prove that the item WAS purchased legally? Has this ever been done before?

...and before you ask, no I'm not planning anything like this. I'm way too paranoid, and I don't think I can handle prison life. :D

Yes, it was a biz card. Believe me, if I was with Lisa Loeb, you ALL would know it. :D

I have to give Bank of America credit on this one. They had already flagged the card when I called in. It did take me a while on the phone, but they fixed everything and said the money would be available within 24 hours. Pretty sweet.

I think my card got lifted at the gym!!! How crappy is that?
