Stockton jazzed about future in Utah Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY -- NBA career steals and assists leader John Stockton, under contract for one more year with the Utah Jazz, doesn't plan to retire after this season. "Anything can happen, but it is definitely not my intention" to retire after the 2000-01 season, he said Tuesday as he opened his 17th season at training camp in Boise, Idaho. Stockton, 38, is entering the final year of a two-year, $22 million contract. He holds NBA records with 13,790 assists and 2,844 steals. He also has won two Olympic gold medals. Despite reaching the NBA Finals twice, Stockton hasn't won a title and it remains his ultimate goal. Those near him say, however, that Stockton just loves to play. "This is the ultimate competition there is," said teammate Karl Malone. "And Stock, he's a guy who loves the competition." When Stockton decides to retire, there probably won't be a news conference. There certainly won't be a farewell tour. Instead, he'll wake up one morning and decide he's ready to stop.
