DA on TNT is talking about Payton will get a buyout by Alt by tomorrow, and Houston will be one of the teams that is going to be interest in signing him.
The thing is, if you want to make a title run, you've got to have a strong 7th point guard ... otherwise you're pretty much hosed.
I was about to open a thread like this one as well. That will be an embarrasment of riches. It is interesting to know that Payton will be a free agent by Sunday. If we sign him, they will make Barret the most liquidatable commodity.
I don't know why but that was funny.............. now back to cleaning the pepsi off my monitor..........
I don't think GP would be happy coming off the bench. And I'm not sure I would play him over James, who plays better defense at this point in his career.
Actually, after reconsidering... my fear in signing Payton would be if Sura returns and plays out the rest of the season healthy. Payton has already made it very clear he considers himself a starter. I'm not entirely certain I'd start Payton over Mike James- but certainly not over Sura. Payton would definitely be unhappy as our third point guard. Jon Barry and David Wesley have been playing well enough at the two guard that it would be a shame to slide Sura over to the two and burry one of them on the bench so that Payton could get minutes as well. However, being that Sura has other injuries, I'd still be very tempted to sign Payton for insurance. I assume they cut Barrett if they do sign Payton.
agreed. GP's defense has fallen off. If Sura even *might* be out for an extended period, GP would be nice to have. But if Sura is back, GP wouldn't take well to riding the pine behind him and James. Plus he may want a decent contract...or maybe even more than 1 year. Neither of which I'd be willing to do for him. If not for the James trade, it'd obviously be 100% go for GP...now, I say pass unless he wants to play the rest of this year only (mayyyybe next yr if a deal around 3 mil max next yr)
Aldridge was just speculating, naming Houston as one the "usual suspects", he also noted that GP was suprisingly happy to Boston and that it wouldn't be surprising to see him go back there. ALl in all I think I'd stick with James.
One thing Van Gundy was doing those few games before Sura went down was having Mcgrady play the PF position for 5 minutes or so during or at the end of games. He did it against Washington and Portland. With our PF postition being as inconsintent as it is, thats not such a bad idea. And I could see JVG doing that more often in the future if he we get a guy like Payton. Imagine running out three guards like Payton, Wesley, and James out there with Yao and Tracy. And when Sura comes back, think about the three guard lineups Van Gundy can put out there as combinations when he wants Tracy to play the 4 spot when we face teams like Dallas, Phoenix, and Seattle, or whoever he wants to create mismatches with. and then theres the issue of Sura's back and them not really giving us the real prognosis, or their real concerns about his prognosis. bottomline, picking up Payton will make us much better team.
yeah me too. Besides with James and Sura there really are no mins for GP here. My bet is that he goes back to the Celtics where he can start and get alot of mins.
Didn't they say he might resign with the Celts also. After all that love in the Boston press for GP the last couple of days, my bet is that is where he winds up. Surprised Toronto didn't do anything, everybody in the Atlantic was trying to keep up with th 76ers so I was expecting something to happen with DM or Jalen. Would love to have GP, if he is bought out, he becomes a FA and wouldn't require compensation, correct.
How about.. GP/James Sura/Wesley/Barry Ehhh.. I think GP is a tad excessive.. unless we release a rotation guy which would make me very sad.
I'll pass. Besides, he'll probably sign on with the Spurs to be Duncan's personality translator so that he can get a ring before he retires.
