Doctors Think They've Found Migraine Cause -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doctors think the right diet will go a long way in helping fight the disease Doctors believe they have found the cause of Steve's migraines. They believe it is an inner ear problem called Meniere's Disease. It can cause the dizziness Wink sometimes experiences and the migraines. It can be treated by a strict diet of certain foods. Steve is still planning on going to the Mayo Clinic up north for further tests to make sure this is the cause of his problem. Wink's lost 60% of his hearing in his right ear. Trainer Keith Jones says they plan to abide by these dietary guidelines and see if the headaches lessen or go away, and watch how often he has dizzy spells and ticking in his ear. We'll keep you posted on how Stevie's doing. We all, of course, wish him the best I don't know if this info has been posted before, sorry if it has. But I think there should be more posts like this, instead of the "Steve sucks, Trade Steve, Steve is hurting this team" posts.
Yep, He has his hearing back, and with the new diet seems to be doing a lot better. However, one of the main causes of the migraines are stress and strenous activity, and since it is off season and he had shoulder surgery so he can not play, he may be experiencing a temporary lull. DaDakota
If it is Meniere's Disease, then Steve's situation may be worse than everyone thinks. It's a degenerative disease that slowly kills the cells in the inner that allow us to hear and localize sounds. There are treatments and diets that can minimize the vertigo and other symptoms, but nothing can stop the disease's progress as of yet. Some people even have surgery to remove the part of the inner ear, but that would be pretty extreme. If that report is right, then we all need to really start questioning how effective Steve will be in the future.
And watch him bolt faster than you can wink. This disease may affect Francis in later life but, if properly watched and treated, should not have a major impact on his basketball career.
i thought i should clarify a little: The disease is caused by a buildup of fluid and pressure in the inner ear that, with time, will stretch the membranes and cause the parts involved in hearing to degenerate. So there are diets and medications that can mitigate some of that pressure, but nothing has been clinically proven to cure the condition. I just dont understand why this hasn't been a bigger point of contention. I think we all just assume that Francis and the Rockets are doing everything about the migraine problems. But 1) I don't think they are as concerned as they should be 2) And i dont even know if there are enought things that can be done to make it better Just a little worried
ok then if it will not affect his ablity while he's playing in the nba, then let him have the max, so when he retires he will have money to spend to sfind out a cure for his desease.
I found this resource on this condition. http://www.earsurgery.org/meniere.html and yes, it is very disturbing if this is Steve's condition. Could randomly effect his skill level. According to this information it commonly is more severe in the fall and spring. Steve can't retire before he signs for the max. It sounds like people are severely underestimating this condition Steve has.
Perhaps they are SuperKev, but that link you provided also mentions ways of treating it which are fairly successful - diet modification & other subtle lifestyle changes, among others - in reducing and nearly eliminating the effects of the disease. In other cases, surgery is needed but still accomplishes the same effect. I don't think it's something to get worked up about, just something to monitor.
The problem is they list the most common treatment as 'diet and exercise'. I guessing that Steve has the 'exercise' part of that taken care of. It seems they wanted to attempt the 'diet' root before surgery. They say surgery has about a 70% chance of success, but less success with younger patients. I certainly hope Steve can get back to his amazing ways this season.
I feel sorry for Steve. I hate diets. Any change in your diet is very life altering. Here's thinkin' of ya.
