Smith visits, but can't draw interest BY ISRAEL GUTIERREZ igutierrez@herald.com FAMILIAR FACE: Former Heat guard Steve Smith visited with team officials Thursday but was not extended a contract offer. An old friend visited the Miami Heat offices on Wednesday, but still it is uncertain if he will call Miami home again. Former Heat guard Steve Smith was in AmericanAirlines Arena for a workout and a visit with Heat coach Pat Riley and general manager Randy Pfund. Smith is an unrestricted free agent, and his agent, Charles Tucker, said Smith enjoyed his visit and considers Miami a possible front-runner for his services. The Heat, though, has not made an offer to Smith, who spent the past two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. The Heat would prefer to round out its roster by signing players to nonguaranteed or partially guaranteed contracts. Smith, however, might not settle for such a deal. The Heat drafted the 6-8 Smith third overall in 1991, and he averaged 15.2 points and five assists in his first three seasons before being traded during the 1994-95 season. Over the past two seasons with San Antonio, Smith's playing time decreased significantly, and he averaged just 9.7 points in 130 games. Smith has shot 43 percent from three-point range over the past two seasons, and his shooting ability would be an asset to the Heat. On the current roster, only Eddie Jones is considered a legitimate three-point threat. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/basketball/6808524.htm
