Steve Francis: We certainly don't need help at the point

I remember Steve Francis had said in public that the Rockets CERTAINLY don't need help at the guards position. Well, I'm not sure if anyone ever notice the Rockets is the worst team in the league in terms of ball execution as well as turnovers.

Point Guards' main duty is to setup the ball movements, controll the tempo, and distribute it. Last season, of the 29 NBA teams, the Rockets ranked 29 (last place) in terms of assists per game.

It's time for the guards in the teams to say that they CERTAINLY NEED help at the backcourt.

Last but not least, Moochie Norris, you're the MVP(Most Valueless Player) of the team.

That's not the intention of my thread. All i'm saying is the Rockets need BETTER role players at point, instead of Moochie as backup.

I sometimes even wonder if Yao could be a better player if playing with good passers like John Stockton or Jason Kidd.

Of course Yao would benifit from a pass first point guard like Kid. But don't give up on francis just yet. I think in time he will grasp the concept that JVG is trying to install.

Yes, Yao maybe slightly better with John or Jason but then that takes away a better offensive threat meaning more double/triple teams for Yao and less scoring. Would it make the team better? I doubt.

Francis said that when the Rox won the lottery and the guy asked him who he thought they'd be drafting. Francis made a joke, saying "We certainly don't need a PG (in reference to Jay Williams)." Just wanted to add that.

I'm sick of this bullsh**. Steve is doing a great job as a point guard. How many assists do you think John Stockton would have if Hornacek, Malone, and Russell couldn't hit a jumpshot? Also, I for one, think that Steve has been extremely patient. He tries to get everyone involved at the beginning of the game and if it's not working out, he tries to score himself (which actually, lately I wish he would do more of). So anyone who thinks they can find a better distributor right now is one of three things:

    1. An idiot (most likely).
    2. Blind (excusable).
    3. A Suns fan or some other enemy troll (if you don't fit in to any of these categories but still think Steve is a horrible point guard, see number one).

I wouldn't mind Nick Van Exel --- he'd do fifty somersaults in joy over playing in Houston --- but that would mean Steve at the 2, so...so why did I even post it? I don't know. Steve is OK for the point but we do have a lack of qualified distributors/passers.

How could the Rockets get Van Exel? I would love to have him as a Rocket with Steve and Jackson and Yao and Taylor and Cato and Piatkowski and Nachbar and Wilks. ;)

I think Steve Francis would make a much better shooting guard than point guard in this league. There's no question that he has loads of basketball talent. His ability to be the playmaker, however, falls far short of his ability to score.

Steve Francis had 3.7 turnovers per game last season (tied with Jason Kidd for most in the league). His assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.68 was DEAD LAST among all starting point guards in the league. This is why as a team, we ranked 28th out of 29 teams in assists and 20th out of 29 teams in turnovers last year. Watching the team played last year only confirmed that ball movement and playmaking were very much lacking.

We need to trade Mobley, get a more traditional playmaking point guard, and shift Francis over to shooting guard. Francis is really only a point guard by name only, because he truly plays much more like a shooting guard both in style and in substance. That leaves us without an adequate playmaker, the presence of which would help our offense immensely.

dallasthomas.. thank you for adding that in.. when francis said it it was totally different than the context this thread is turning it into..... the rockets did not need a pg with the first pick is what steve was trying to say.. he didnt say anything about not needing role players etc

We might actually score points easily on a fast break if we had a point guard.

man, the rockets lose one game to a tough Memphis team and people are making it out to be the end of the world. Jeff Van Gundy will have the team ready to play against Chicago. I would have hated to be in that locker room after the game. You will see a much better team tomorrow.

i for one thought steve made a bad desision through the whole game. No one was hitten, and he still tried to get everyone invloved. He shoulf scored more.

The guy you really need at point in Houston is either Claxton or Snow. They both learned how to play point even with and around AI in Philly.
Houston "You have a problem" your own AI named Steve. By the way, adding NVE there would be like adding another Steve. I think you have plenty of shooters without a conscience. Come to think of it you already have an NVE, his name is Catman

Yao may or may not benefit from Jason Kidd. Jason Kidd is a running game PG. Yao will not benefit from teams that try and fast break often. Yao can't run the floor like that.

Secondly the quote that's the title of this thread is taken way out of context. Somebody else already pointed that out. That being said, I think this whole thread was started with a bias.
