Did anyone watch the TNT post-game show where they showed the lockerroom interview of Steve Francis? Here's a paraphrase:

"Coach wanted me to push the ball, that's what I did, I tried to go in and create some opportunities, I didn't see any so I took the shot. I'd take that shot again."

ROFL how about that team captain taking responsibility for this actions!

why not the coach take some responsibilities for burning timeouts.

any player with a decent basketball IQ would know NOT to do what Steve did tonight. Having no timeouts was no excuse.

okay silantFan. What would you want steve to do. Did you even watch the replay. Cat and JJ were glued to the defenders, and pagget was succesfully gaurded. Steve was trying to look for somone to cut open, but everyone stood still. You want him to make a 2, okay. Now your asking steve then to have the spurs get fouled, and run the length of the court in less than 5 seconds.

Charles Barley's response immediately after Francis's comment: "And you'd lose everytime, too".

To which Magic and Kenny Smith agreed. As Fratello and Collins pointed out...with that much time, you get the 2 points and put the team with the worst NBA FT% since the 1940's on the FT line. You don't need a timeout to figure this out...just read a scouting report.

JVG plan was for pagget to take a three of the pick, but they gaurded that well. Once all that was done, steve didnt have much time to take a 3. So if JVg went in for a lay-up right when he crossef the halfcourt line, he would be disobeying JVG.

I get the feeling that Barkley really doesn't like Francis and Mobley.

Actually this is not what happened, as I was at the game. What did happen was Steve tried unsuccesfully twice to use a Scott Padgett pick.

Now, in his defense, Padgett was put into the game at the very end for the purpose of three point shooting ability. What JVG failed to realize is Weatherspoon (whom Padgett replaced), as a wide body, would have made a better picker. Nonetheless, we saw a continuation of horrible pick use by our guards. One of the reasons the Spurs guards ran wild on us all night is because they may be some of the better pick users in the league. The Padgett pick didn't work because Steve tried to use it 5 feet away. When you're a professional, you should be able to know how to use a pick effectively.

Maybe cause he's played with them.:p no, seriously, seems like he still cares for the Rockets, its just that he seems to be becoming a YOF....which is easy to do if u r an outsider. but if u watch all the games u would know that Yao still needs work....

If Steve made up his mind and drove in when he beat Horry the first two times, then the rockets would have 2 points and another possession at the end of the game. Bottom line: He wasted 14 seconds on the clock, didn't pass to anyone, and threw up an airball.

    Hardly,

Charles and Kenny will be the first ones to say Yao doesn't belong in the all-star game, yet they'll also be the first to say Carmelo and Lebron belongs. I don't think that's becoming a YOF, if anything he hates the rockets.

How about Magic Johnsons response to Steve's "I'd take that shot again". Magic responded by saying "if his teammates or he said something like that, there would be a problem"

How about looking for something positive too?

If Francis can hear Jeff telling him to push the ball up, Jeff could've also given him a signal to go for a quick 2. I'm not going to defend Francis for not going for quick 2, but I'm not letting Jeff off the hook either. If going for the quick 2 is in fact the best play, both should be at blame.

Let Yao take the 3 pointer, he can hit it....and his defender would not be able to guard him.

Since neither of us knows Van Gundy personally, I'm not sure you can say what Van Gundy's intention was. However, there were 15.5 seconds on the game clock as Francis talked with Van Gundy on the sidelines during Manu's FT's. Plenty enough time to discuss options.

Padgett set the initial screen on Parker at 10.4 seconds and Horry switched off on Francis. Padgett was briefly open as Parker did not rotate that quickly. Instead of passing, Francis continued to dribble toward Horry and past the arc not once but twice. Padgett rotated to the weakside taking Parker with him.

At 6.8 seconds, Ginobilli moved toward the paint to support Horry and had left Jim Jackson open on Francis' left. Francis never looked at him.

At 5.9 seconds, Francis looked back toward Padgett (on the weakside) who was now moving back toward Francis for a screen. The screen was executed poorly and Francis backpeddaled (retreated) off the pick allowing Parker to easily guard him (switch off from Padgett).

If you want to believe Van Gundy wouldn't have preferred Francis taking a quick two driving past Horry or driving past Horry and forcing Manu to leave Jackson open in the corner over the travesty that transpired, we'll have to agree to disargee.

Barkley felt they should have passed the ball more to him which is fine, only his fat butt broke his leg 20 games into Francis's 1st season because it couldn't hold that much weight anymore. He used to be a lot more critical. I was actually surprised because last night he actually said JVG should give both of them more freedom.
