That is weird. It just so happens that on the same ESPN Mag cover featuring Yao Ming, there is Steve Francis' name. I wonder if this foreshadows a long, and productive one-two punch for the Rockets. I hope so...

    Cool :).

He doesn't look very muscular - but most Asian people do not tend to have very thick arms or extremely huge muscles and often they are still quite strong and tenacious.

I do hope the Rockets take him.

It says something like "Also receiving votes" next to Steve's name. Maybe this was some kind of poll as to who is going to be the "NEXT" big thing in the NBA. That would explain the whole "NEXT" theme, I guess.

I remember that issue-- still have it in my house.

That picture and article are from late 2000 (November or December). Once a year, ESPN the Magazine anoints someone as their "NEXT" athlete. They poll all their writers for all the different sports, and come to a consensus on the athlete most likely to burst onto the national sports scene. The previous year, the winner was Vince Carter. The 2000 selection was Ming, but three or four other athletes also got votes (Francis was one), so they also had feature articles in the issue.
