[STEROIDS] Sheffield on Clemens: "he's not just drinking soda water"

That was one of the dumbest comments I've ever read. He's not accusing Clemens of anything, but Clemens is doing steroids!

Clemens isn't the only old pitcher still pitching well. There's guys like Randy Johnson, and even Jamie Moyer who is like 50 years old. Guys close to 40- Kevin Brown, Tom Glavine, Kenny Rogers, all of whom are having very good years.

And Clemens' head didn't expand like that of Sheffield's friend Barry. Also, Clemens isn't throwing complete games like he used to, while Bonds has been hitting more homeruns than ever.

 

IMO, Gary's comments were inappropriate.

Really, what is the point of that? It is a lose-lose situation for him.

I heard a spin the other say from a talking head trying to paint Gary as a great locker guy but I have never seen it and I do not see it in the situation. Good guys have class that is neither temporary nor puerile.

Has a pitcher, at some point, taken steriods, probably, but this is weak...If you would have asked me which players have taken roids', I never would have come up with Shef, but again, I never would have come up with Clemens either...

This reminds me of the South Park Special Olympics episode where he's admits using steriods and McGuire, Bonds and Giambi are in the background...

 

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but if Clemens wasn't an Astro, would any of you really have a problem with Sheffield's comment? Bond's has obviously been linked to BALCO, but we're all really just speculating on whether he's actually been taken steroids or not, just like Sheffield is speculating on Clemens.

Whether it's appropriate for him to be speculating to the media or wheter it's true is a different matter.

I agree with you. If he had said Schilling instead of Clemens no one on here would have cared and some may have even given examples to support him.

 

His comments are not stupid because of Clemens, they were stupid in context. He was stating how tired he was of innocent athletes being asked about steroids. Then he turns around and literally accuses clemens of taking them in the same sentence. That was the total absurdity of it. It was hypocracy at it's best. Sub in Schilling, and it was still stupid.

 

I don't really have a problem with people speculating about Clemens or Bagwell or other guys taking steroids.

But Sheffields comments are different because:

1) HE'S the one that is being taken to court, not Clemens. So it sounds like he is just trying to cover up his own mess by attacking Clemens. Or maybe he is trying to justify his own use of steroids, who knows?

2) There really isn't any proof. No connection to Balco, no giant head, and Clemens numbers have been declining (except so far this year, where he is pitching to guys who have never seen him before). So while it is fine for us to speculate about it, it is different when you are a fellow ballplayer making accusations in public. Gary "race card" Sheffield crossed the line.

Of course not but as Astro fans we stick up for OUR players...If he had said Schilling then Boston fans would have been all over him.

but just on a side note, hasn't Clemens been accused of taking steroids before?

 

That would explain the roid rage during the Piazza incident a few years back.

There was one article which accused him. But it was out of nowhere. Nothing like the Bonds or McGwire accusations.

If it was true, I wouldn't be surprised, but there is little evidence for now.

 

Ok. Just wanted to make sure that we aren't up in arms just because he accused Clemens, despite the fact that I don't think he has either.

 

His point was that pitchers aren't being questioned like the hitters are.
