Did anyone catch Stern's jab at JVG? It's pretty clear he's going to make sure he never coaches again in the NBA. Basically he made a bitter "joke" about the time he fined Gundy for calling out the officials and implying the officiating was bs during the Mavs v. Rockets playoffs.

Interestingly enough that was a series Tim D. said was fixed.

that's how Gundy was spinning it and that's what it sounds like, but my first thought was Stern was admitting that he's fixing the games with the refs

I don't remember it exactly, but Stern took a small jab at JVG. Then JVG brought up the fine (not Stern) saying he'd rather take a small jab than a big jab ($100K fine).

Van Gundy was quick to shoot back by wondering aloud if he was owed a refund on that 100 grand. Stern strikes me as the type to check payphone coin returns for nickels, so JVG won't have to wonder about his tax bracket getting blown up this year.

Or it was pretty clear that Stern was just doing some ribbing of JVG, because he knew that VanGundy was broadcasting the game, and even as a broadcaster had voiced is displeasure with how the refs were being directed to call the games.

Stern is such a jerk. I'm really happy he got credit for the NBA's success that really belongs to MJ/Nike.

I thought it was all a joke.. JVG sure took it as one.. David Stern's face and demeanor showed that it was a joke. So all in all... IT WAS A JOKE. :)

THat's not exactly what happened. It was an obvious joke.

He said something like "I enjoy watching the games on TV except when I have to listen to JVG". THen Breen says "oh a small jab from the commissionr" then JVG says "hey a small jab is better than a 100k fine!"

I think there was something said about adding in more reviewable plays via replay but not to the point that would satisfy JVG. That was the first mention.

this is of course the obvious and logical answer.

but remember, there's a David Stern/referee conspiracy

i believe he said, "a small jab is better then the $100k haymaker he landed"

it seemed all in good fun. And Stern is not keeping JVG from a coaching job.

I thought it was a joke too, but then I caught Stern's comments this morning in the Chron about how announcers and specifically color commentators were inflaming fan's perceptions about both technical and flagrant fouls.

I just thought it was interesting that quip about JVG came out after he'd made those statements.

It was a joke. He was commenting on how to make the officiating more open to review that will satisfy most people, but not everyone like JVG. For those that don't know, JVG has some way out there ideas. Basically it was a quick jab at some of JVG's idea to improve the league.
