I think there was a thread about this back when the first teaser trailer was shown, but couldnt find it. So.... Anyone else seeing this over the holiday weekend? I am a rabid Stephen King fan and this looks like it should be good. Frank Durabont has a knack for adapting Stephen Kings work really well (i.e. Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile). From the reviews I have read, it is pretty spot on with the novella and it doesnt pull any punches on the gore & violence (a must in a true Stephen King story). Was just curious if anyone else is interested in seeing it. I see all of Kings adaptations and usually am pretty disappointed with all the changes from the source material (i.e. 1408, Dreamcatcher). But I have a feeling that Durabont isnt going to miss on this one. Now, if only an epic adaptation of King's The Dark Tower series could get made.
It looks like it'll disappoint.. although now is a really good time to watch it since there's heavy fog every morning.
Really, I think the marketing has been great. The fog in the mornings is a great marketing campaign, lol. Why do you think it will be a disappointment? Any particular reason? Or just because Kings work always seems to get jacked up?
Well I never really was a fan of movies based on King's novels. What was the last movie that came out of his? I may be wrong but from what I can remember it's 1408? Boy did that disappoint. Now every time I see a Stephen King movie I just To me they're never scary and I hate 'horror' movies that involves with monsters or some other creatures. Maybe it's just that his stories are better made for novels instead of movies, I don't now. The Mist seems like it could be a cheesy movie, I haven't read the novel. I'll probably watch it when it's on DVD.
1408 was alot better than I expected, it was creative and not just the same old recycled crap in most "horror" movies. Not scary but well made. They don't make scary horror movies anymore, they just make them to shock or they add a moment when someone pops up and loud sound is made. The Mist does seem like it will be a bit cheesy, plus the whole staying in a grocery store and having everyone flip out is a little overdone.
I'm not one of those people that whine everytime a change from a book is needed to be made to make it translate onto film better. But 1408 was like a completely different story. Sometimes this works (The original Shining, with Jack Nicholson), but most times it doesnt (The Lawnmower Man).
I'm looking forward to seeing it - I like how Andre Braugher is in it; he was also in the remake of Salem's Lot with Rob Lowe (very good - both it and the original). King movies are obviously crazy in how hit or miss they are. Dark Tower would be incredibly difficult to translate - like the Stand. As crazy as it sounds at first, I feel that the Stand would have worked best as an on going TV show (not mini series). You have the skeleton of the story and the ending set up for you, and the writers could have freedom to play with the characters and characters not in the book for two or three years, depending on ratings. Not unlike LOST, which I'm finding more and more to be a MASSIVE fusion of the King library. Smokey the monster = Pennywise (IT) The island and it's hatches = the dark tower and mid-world Numerous character lifts All the King literary plants The protagonist of Talisman and Black House is Jack Sawyer The Hatch in Season 1 = The Hatch in Tommyknockers The Langoliers as a lift etc, etc There's a crap ton. Evan
It looks kind of cheesy, like when I saw The Number 23 (which was terrible), and we all kept sarcastically saying "Oh my God! There's twelve forks in this drawer, 5 knives and 6 spoons...that's...that's 23!!!" When I saw the preview for this is was all "OH NOES, THE MIST!" I've never read that book, so I don't know much about the story. It might be good, who knows.
I wanted to see it because i wanted to see what was in the mist but then during the Heroes episode last night they showed the trailer for the mist and it showed the creatures. I'm so pissed. I no longer want to watch it.
Looks pretty boring to me from the trailers. Also, could Stephen King might want to think about setting some of his stories in someplace other than Maine.
They've been running a trailer that shows the secret for awhile. Like you, once I saw what was going on, I lost all interest in seeing in the film. 1) The trailers have basically revealed the full plot to me now. 2) I don't like films about Spoiler monsters, especially ones about giant bugs, snakes, etc. So ridiculous 3) With the spotty record of King book-movie translations, I'd rather not bet my Friday night on this one succeeding.
Holy hell, I have been trying to sell all the LOST connections to King novels to every LOST fan I know. ESPECIALLY the Hatch/Tommyknockers. King is a big fan of the show himself, so they are probaly paying homage to him. Dark Tower would be tough to translate and hold interest to anyone who hasnt read the books. I wouldnt want them to do it unless it was really going to be treated special. Not just some crap TV mini-series with Ben Affleck playing Roland or something... The Salems Lot remake was really good though. Andre Braugher is always solid.
Seeing it at 4:30! Will let you guys know how it is. And Im a nitpicky King fan. Hope I enjoy it more than I enjoyed seeing Beowulf last night...
Pretty long but for the suspense lover it's worth it. I thought it was well put together having some great elements, including well placed humor, the aforementioned suspense and a knock you on your ass ending... ...if you're bored in the beginning, the ending is worth the wait. "can someone accompany a lady home" creepy
