So, I was watching the game over at a friends last night, and afterwards I walked out to my car and noticed that the little door to my gas tank was open. I checked and it doesn't look like someone stole any gas from my tank. I barely had any anyways (the gas light was on for about 15 miles) But it got me thinking, with gas prices at $4 this summer, will this become a concern for us? Has this been an issue in the past? How do they do it? I remember Otto doing it in an epsidoe of the simpsons....
siphon it with rubber tube, i thought its harder to do nowadays since the flap would have to be opened from inside.
YOu could always siphon it out. We used to do that from our car for the motor boat....or something like that.

yeah, some cars have locks on it, some don't, some have them where you can only open it from the drivers side. not that you mentioned it, i'm glad that my vehicle has a lock thingie.
yeah, thats how my bro's car is. the release is on the driver's side. it's been time for a new car anyways....im lookin at a hybrid, cuz gas is killin me
Don't think this will ever be a REAL problem, as gas would probably have to be so expensive that either: a) electric cars/alternative transportation becomes too practical to resist b) all automobiles would have mechanisms to prevent this type of theft Here's how you would do it, using a tube, gas can, and gravity without getting a mouthful of gas. http://www.ehow.com/how_2041839_siphon-gas-car.html
I hope you are right but in the 70's people did have problems with others stealing gas from their cars. It's why most all cars starting having locking gas caps. Used to be NO cars had locking gas caps.
welll, i think it's gonna be a huge problem, esepcially if gas hits $10 per gallon in 2012 http://www.cgblog.org/2008/04/10gallon-gas.html i think people eventually will have to buy smaller cars.....for me, it's time for a hybrid cuz im paying about $14 a day on gas
i think most new cars these days (like past 10 years) they added a bar/cross thing in the middle of the tube/pipe goin down to the tank. so it stops the hose. you could try it yourself to see if your car has one.
Gas will not hit $10/gallon, as the dollar will not weaken far enough to let that happen. You should get a Prius for your commute. Those things get 48 city, 45 highway if you know how to drive it right. I have an A4 1.8T, and it gets about 23 city, 31 highway, and ~26 mixed, so I'll probably hold onto it for awhile.
QUESTION: Will High gas Prices drive folx back to Trains? I think we need more High Speed Trains in this country Rocket River
if you have a diesel car, park your diesel car outside. a lot folks who still gas probably can't tell. so they steal diesel, and ruin their car. it's not my idea, some one at work told me.
Isn't the benefit of a hybrid if you do mostly city, stop and go driving? It's my understanding if you do a lot of highway driving you are using gas regardless. I'd be all for hybrids if it wasn't for the much higher sticker price. I know in the past you couldn't make up the cost difference between the money you spent on gas in a regular car vs the higher price of a hybrid. With gas prices higher now that margin may have narrowed. My wife drives a Prius, btw.
From what I understand, the hybrid drive system is most effective when it switches from gas to electric when you're idling at stop lights. That's why the Prius is cool, because it tells you how to drive the car most effeciently. Also haven't the prices on hybrids gone down some from a couple of years ago. My understanding is that a new Prius only runs like $25k.
