Came across in interesting read by UHoustonFan posted on thedreamshake.com. Link at bottom.

    1. Teams leading series 3-1 have a 174-8 overall series winning record.
    2. For game 5, teams leading series 3-1 have a 0-6 record when playing on road.
    3. In the first round, teams leading series 3-1 have a 22-2 overall winning record.
    4. In the first round, teams starting playoff without homecourt have a 4-2 overall series winning record when up 3-1.

My take: let's be the first team leading 3-1 to win game 5 on road.

We were one of those 8 losing teams.

    Just win the 4th game.

When were we up 3-1??? We've been down 3-1 before, in 1995 but not up 3-1. Unless we went on to win the series(Utah WCF 1994)

Tracy was up 3-1 against Detroit, but as far as I know thats the only connection to the current team with any kind of 3-1 losing stats. We were down 3-1 last year with game 5 at home, so Utah was one of the losing teams for the game 5 stat.

    when was this?

or are you just wording this wrong

i cant remember when the rockets had a 3-1 lead and lost the series. they've came back but never lost.

the four teams that did it that come to mind first are:

    rockets over the suns
knicks over the heat (though this series was marred by suspensions)
    pistons over the magic
    suns over the lakers

My bad... I stand corrected. For some reason I thought we went up 3-1 on the Mavs a few years ago.

#2 is incorrect....Rockets led 3-1 in the 1986 WCF and won game 5.

I knew it had to be. Something about "no underdog in NBA history has ever won game 5 when up 3-1" didn't seem believable to me.

You guys are probably thinking about McGrady's 2003 playoffs with Orlando when they were up (as the 8th seed surprisingly) 3-1 against the #1 Pistons then went on to lose every game by 20+ points

    IF these numbers are accurate...

It's not surprising that none have won game 5 on the road in the first round. The better team (better record, at least) facing elimination at home... while the road team has 3 games to win 1... the intensity factor will be heavily in the home team's favor.

Even if we win, we might not get this honor. Mavs/Spurs tip off a half hour before us.

Speaking of which, how weird is it that there have only been 6 road teams up 3-1 in the past, but there are 2 just this year? (again, if the numbers are right)

So odds are we drop the next game? I'd say that's extremely likely. Look at it this way, if we win game 5, we would have to win 3 games in a row against a very balanced team. 3 in a row, against any playoff contender is really hard. Look, LA couldn't even go three in a row against Utah!! To counter that, Portland NEEDS 3 in a row to stay alive. So while the odds are against us, they are stacked much higher against them. A win in game 5 would really push the moral up and give us momentum coming into LA. I'm just glad the first two games against LA will be in LA (assuming we go on).

So this is the one that truly applies to us.

66.7% isn't as high as I would like, but then again history doesn't actually effect the present so...ehh.

There's just no way we will lose 3 straight games. We will win against Portland.

Team coached by Rick Adelman have a 0-11 record when starting the series without home court advantage.

Lets be the first Adelman-coached team to win a series without Home Court Advantage.

There could be two of those instances this year. Mavs over Spurs, and Rockets over Blazers....

    Wow.
