It's driving me crazy. I feel it when putting on/taking off my clothes, I feel it when I make my bed, I feel it when I make contact with other people. It's everywhere! I know it always comes out in the cold weather...and it's likely related to the dry air (maybe?). Besides using a humidifier, is there anything else I can do to minimize this annoyance?
Yeah, they have some spray that comes in an aerosol can that you can use on your clothes before you put them on to avoid accumulating static. I don't know where you get it, and I don't know how much, but I do know that it exists.
You're one of them smart science people...do you happen to know what the active ingredient is in the spray that makes it work? Now that you mention, I actually remember that a guy I used ot work with kept a can of that stuff in his desk. It was great
If you don't feel like getting the spray, a simple way to help the problem somewhat is to use your keys. Whenever you feel like you've built up a lot of static, just hold the key (the metal part)and touch it to some other metal surface. You'll usually get a nice satisfying blue dot of electricity leaving the tip of the key when you do that, or at least a snapping noise. I do it all the time, especially before touching doorknobs.
I have trouble with doorknobs. I have to touch the wall first to reduce the charge and then grab the door knob. It's become part of my natural behavior. I don't even think about it anymore.
I have a problem getting out of the car and getting a shock when I close the door....any tips for that? It's annoying as hell!
staticguard. you can get it at any drug store or wal mart type places. The best way to avoid this is to walk on the carpet in your socks and while you walk shuffle your feet so you rub the carpet with the bottom of your feet as you walk. Do this for about 3-5 minutes and then go touch a metal object and you will discharge the electric static from your body into the metal....works everytime
Quit wearing clothes made of synthetic fabrics. Those "fleece" clothes from Old Navy are nothing but fluffy polyester. In the winter, synthetic fabrics build up static, and make you sweat/stink. Instead of that, wear cotton. -- droxford
I have this problem with every friggin' door I touch, especially when getting out of my truck. I've now gotten into the habit of slapping door handles before I open the door just to get the shock out of the way. I've got to look like a uber tard doing this.
I get so much static electricity built up in my body that I've drawn an arc between a door knob and my hand. Yikes!
I actually had some SE built up when I went to grab my (plugged into the wall charging) cell phone. Thing went nuts. I was worried I ruined it, but turned it off/on, and it worked okay. Of course, I probably could have been killed as well, but meh.
You should start touching knobs with the palm of your hand. The base of your palm near the wrist is much less sensitive than your fingertips. EDIT: Oh crap. My Bad. This reply was supposed to go in the erectile dysfunction thread.
If static is a major problem for you, just get some grounding straps for your shoes. When I was working in the lab, I would never get shocked, and more importantly, none of the boards would get fried, because of those things.
Stick balloons all over your body via static electricity, or wear spandex with a cape and call yourself Electro.
