What's amazing is that they still define this as socialism and that CNN fell into that trap, as well.

Any tax involves a redistribution of wealth....right now my money is being redistributed to older people in the form social security. It gets redistributed to sewers and roads that even "those people" use. And even..gasp...PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!

Such a ridiculous concept. I can't believe this is even a discussion.

This is not by accident. It is the result of $ hundreds of millions of dollars in propaganda from right wing think tanks that has confused people. The folks who fund these think tanks to spread this bull have been rewarded with the lowest individual taxes in the developed world.

You see it repeated on this bbs all the time. This is before the McCain campaign started calling Obama a "socialist".

As far as Republican states getting more federal money, this could be the result of their over control in Congress. Puny states like Wyoming have two senators. It disenfranchises the huge states. California has almost 100 times the population of Alaska and has just two Senators. OK for the 1700's, but an impediment to democracy in the 21st Century.

The typical twist of comparing apples to oranges. If you're going to try and compare taxes to socialism, then I suppose we should simply do away with the IRS completely.

Where Obama went wrong is he specifically said he wanted to take money from the rich and give it to everyone else. I do have a problem with that statement.

What is sad every president brings us closer to a socialistic/totalitarianism state. Its not just the left, its the right also. Patriot act was wrong. Wealth sharing is wrong. The bailout was wrong. No candidate is perfect and it gags me that so many people follow each of their sides so blindly.

A progressive income tax like we have now, and have had since FDR, and McCain will also have is taking from the rich and giving to others.

I agree, it's dumb, but what about CNN are you referring to? I see this table got data from CNN, but I don't think CNN had anything to do with writing Socialist on it. Are you referring to something else?

CNN has featured a variety of "Obama: Socialism?" banner graphics for the last two weeks in a row and featured all sorts of special reports on his brand of "socialism".

IF that network is "in the tank" for Obama you'd think they'd have somebody with a high school-level of education write the headlines, which obviously they are not....or else they are buying into this stupidity.

    What really irks me is:

Let's say Obama comes on the news and screams blatantly: "I'm going to go Robin Hood, and take the rich folks' money and give it to the poor!"

You'd think the American public would rejoice, seeing as how 80% of the entire public controls less than 20% of US wealth. Why the outrage from Main Street?

If a more true "redistribution" scenario were to take place, most of the morons who keep spewing this "socialist" smear on TV in man-on-the-street interviews would be better off.

The real problem is the despicable disinformation campaign run by the fail-laden Rove "proteges" that are now manning McCain's camp. McCain wouldn't have turned to this on his own devices, and Palin... well, she thinks socialism is when you're addicted to Facebook.

Not really. I consider the real tax distribution taking from the middle class and giving to the rich. Considering that financial companies gets $650-700 in tax money and pay very little in taxes in comparison. It doesn't really matter that they have a higher marginal tax rate, when they get more than they put in the system.

The average middle class payer contributes more in payroll and income taxes as a percentage of income than these CEOs and large companies.
