Okay y'all, there are a ton of offseason threads out there, and this is another one. Kind of.

Thanks for all the kudos, y'all. I figured with all the trade threads heading our way, all this information in the same place might make it easier to come up with plausible ideas instead of attempts to trade away Rockets trash for other teams' treasure (Luther Head and Steve Francis for Chris Paul). And if I ever sound sardonic, just understand it's tongue-in-cheek.

I've linked Wikipedia's Salary Cap entry multiple times; it's probably the easiest-to-understand source on the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement.
As long as I'm able to edit this tread with new information, I'll continue to do so.

    Table of contents:
    1. Players on payroll 08-09
    2. Major needs to address in the offseason
    3. What direction the team is currently going
    4. 2008 NBA Draft
    5. Available free agents

Before putting up a new thread try consulting this one. Here's what condition the Rockets will be in next year:

    Players on payroll 08-09
Wikipedia's entry on the NBA Salary Cap
Major needs to address in the offseason
    • Third scoring option
    • Backup Center
    • Athleticism
    • Upgrade to Point Guard
    • Height, especially on the perimeter
These do not reflect my personal opinions but rather the general consensus of the BBS.

What direction the team is currently going
    2008 NBA Draft
Wikipedia's entry on the NBA Salary Cap

I'm not going to do much with the draft; it's too much work to get all the players in there, and it's probably better suited to the College and International board anyway.
Clutch's Draft Thread, DD's Mock Draft Thread
However, the Rockets have the 25th pick.
There are various Mock Drafts at ESPN, RealGM, My NBA Draft.com, HoopsHype, Draft Express, etc.

    Available free agents
Wikipedia's entry on the NBA Salary Cap
NBA Salary information: Draft Express, HoopsHype, Sports City, etc.

Key: ETO = Early Termination Option; P = Player Option; T = Team Option; QO = Qualifying Offer
There... That's about it. Hope this helps!

I'll include that. My information I put up comes from a couple of sites that don't have him listed.

Amazing how Mike Harris made over 100K in just a short time. It takes my dad a whole year to make 100K.

He should be a three year deal (starting with 07-08) with team option for the fourth. (plus incentives that are unnamed) (EDIT: duh should have checked the link)

But fantastic job on putting this all in one place.

I'm just wondering, how much cap space would we have left if we were to sign a rookie in the first round? I know its less than $900 k/per year typically for the #25 pick.

A lot of great pieces to work with. As much as I hated to see Bonzi go it really did free us up to make some good offseason or deadline deals this next season. It's good to see the Rockets have a lot of flexibility. Get it done Morey.

    Major trade pieces:

Francis (he is not coming back), Jackson, Head, Battier, Hayes
gives us $19.72 million in moveable contracts...

Lots of S&T possibilities out there with that much salary to play with. I'd love to see Marion join this team at the SF if they could get him to take something a little lower than what he's wanting. Let's face it, there's more free agents going to be out there than there is money. We're going to steal somebody this offseason, I've got a feeling.

btw, nice job on compiling the info blathersby

If we sign Landry, does it eat into our MLE? Thanks!

Great job, Blathersby! I love this. I hope this becomes the only offseason thread for a while. I like that people just have to look at the first post to know what the hell is going on and there is no excuse for making impossible suggestions.

That said, I'm not sure, but I thought they signed Mike Harris through the end of the year with a team option on next season - just as they did Loren Woods.

More than likely. They'll have to pay him atleast Chuck Hayes money and that'll come out of the MLE.

Mid-Level Exception: A team is allowed to sign one player to a contract equal to the average NBA salary, even if the team is over the salary cap already, or if the signing would put them over the cap. This is known as the Mid-level exception. The Mid-Level Exception for the 2007-08 NBA season is $5.36 million. Only teams that are over the Salary Cap can use the mid-level exception to sign free agents.

To the best of my knowledge, it just depends on how much the Rockets end up paying. I'm fairly sure Landry isn't on a Rookie Scale contract, but I could be mistaken.

lol, no it wasn't! I added that only after you asked.
