Man! Everytime I go on vacation some major **** happens. But this is just crazy

Alive or dead, Uncle Sam doesn't give any free rides.

Earlier I noted that the State Department, in stark contrast to the Canadian government, is requiring U.S. citizens caught in Lebanon to pay for the cost of their evacuation. (Rep. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has since weighed in, saying that this was no time "for quibbling over payment for evacuation.")

I called up the State Department to ask about the policy. "We are not standing there with a cash box asking people to pay before they get on the boat," spokeswoman Janelle Hironimus told me. But if they don't pay (by check, no cash or credit cards accepted), or sign a form promising to pay, they don't go. It's the law:

"Reasonable commercial air fare" shall be charged to all evacuees.

    What if they're dead?

Same deal, she said. No freebies, even if you're not around to enjoy it.

Hironimus said that she didn't know the exact fee being charged. Evacuees are signing promissory notes. Those citizens will find out how much they owe when they get the bill in the mail.

And if a U.S. citizen is killed waiting to evacuate -- or because they stayed behind, unable to promise their government they could pay?

"We arrange with their families," Hironimus said. "We discuss their choices, but it’s paid for by the families."

In any case, the spokeswoman assured me, no one would get left behind.

Ah, but if they're wealthy, they get a tax cut!
What ever happened to helping Americans out overseas who are in need, costs be damned??

How was Moosehead treating you? :)

I drove with my wife all the way to Rockwood 1 day before your trip. We didn't have much time to spend there but did take a ferry to this island (the boat guy said it is actually a peninsula) and walked around on it briefly. Nice place. Vastly under-developed, though.

After Katrina, you'd figure they'd at least try to do better in terms of evacuating people. And as bad as that evacuation was, at least they weren't charging people bus fees to leave.

Give me a break. Our Congressmen waste money on a multi-million dollar bridge in alaska to an island of less than 50 people or a museum on shrimp farming in the South and we can't afford to help evacuate American citizens.

You may have a point if our politicians weren't paying for every other dumb thing in their districts. But considering our reckless use of government funds, I'd say apparently plenty of things are free.

It's part of that "ownership society."

"Officials estimate that 25,000 Americans have poured into Lebanon this summer."

There is a reason Lebanon is not at the top of my list for summer vacation.

My dad hasn't ever been big on foreign travel. Except for a trip to Western Europe, he has never left the continental U.S. His reasoning, "once you leave the United States, you leave all of its laws and protections behind too."

I've traveled a lot but generally try to avoid places where groups like Hezbollah hang out. Generally the Middle East ain't on the list.

I'm sure, but the list of beautiful places is very long. Maybe by the time I get to it they'll have calmed down a bit.
