oh, and it's **** like this that explains why israel and the palestinians are at war. the former is a democracy, the latter are terrorists, and have been at war with the US for over 30 years.

[rquoter]A newly declassified report from 1973 shows that Yasser Arafat personally commanded the terrorist attack that resulted in the murders of Ambassador Cleo Noel and his deputy George Moore, as well as a Belgian diplomat. Moreover, the two murders appear to have been the entire point of Arafat's attack:

The Khartoum operation was planned and carried out with the full knowledge and personal approval of Yassir Arafat, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the head of Fatah. Fatah representatives based in Khartoum participated in the attack, using a Fatah vehicle to transport the terrorists to the Saudi Arabian embassy.

Initially, the main objective of the attack appeared to be to secure the release of the Fatah/BSO [Black September Organization] leader Muhammed Awadh (Abu Da'ud) from Jordanian captivity. Information acquired subsequently reveals that the Fatah/BSO leaders did not expect Awadh to be freed, and indicates that one of the primary goals of the operation was to strike at the United States because of its efforts to achieve a Middle East peace settlement which many Arabs believe would be inimical to Palestinian interests.

The State Department had proof all along that Yasser Arafat not only masterminded this attack, but deliberately plotted to kill American diplomats as a means to pressure the US out of the Middle East. In other words, the PLO/Fatah/BSO conducted a terrorist attack on American interests, murdered Americans, and got away with it. They sat on this information while the US insisted on negotiating with Arafat, even though many suspected he had planned the murders all along.

The State Department should have warned successive administrations from dealing with this terrorist and instead recommended that we capture him and try him for the murders of Noel and Moore. These men worked for the State Department themselves. I guess the lesson here is that State won't lift a finger to bring assassins of diplomats to justice, a lesson that current diplomats may want to consider now. (via It Shines For All)[/rquoter]

The Irish Republican Army was a bunch of terrorists, too. Thankfuly, some people in this world are willing to actually work for a solution instead of pointing fingers and telling everybody how bad the other side is. Or would you rather have people blowing up crap in Northern Ireland still?

That's a pretty serious charge basso. Any idea why captain's quarters brings it up now?

Oh and if we're taking away peace prizes, I think Kissinger should have his yanked too.

basso, quit being disillusioned. The entire state of Palestine has been in shambles nationalistically ever since Israel forcefully dismantled Palestinian industry almost 60 years ago.

Its Hard to Write a Rebel Tune

Peace has come to Northern Ireland
And the north and south have joined hands
    And now Sinn Fein
is no longer a royal pain
    And Gerry Adams
    is in Parliament

Cause its hard to write a Rebel tune
when peace is declared and the fighting is through
I want to write a ballad
    about rebels bold and gallant
but I guess I’ll just write about booze

    We’ve said hello to provos
    and now we say goodbye
    The bold finnean men
have come back from the glen
    and the broad black brimmer
    is in the closet

Cause its hard to write a Rebel tune
when peace is declared and the fighting is through
I want to write a ballad
    about rebels bold and gallant
but I guess I’ll just write about booze

The streets are quiet in Ulster
    and in derry too
    The men behind the wire
    sit home by the fire
    and the motorcar
    been returned for deposit

Cause its hard to write a Rebel tune
when peace is declared and the fighting is through
I want to write a ballad
    about rebels bold and gallant
but I guess I’ll just write about booze

I miss the good old days
    With dem hand grenades
    The rebels are gettin old
And the simtex has gotten cold

So now that peace has come to the land
No need to fear the Black and Tans
It’s a small price to pay
    For such a peaceful day
But I still want to write
    About the old days.

Cause its hard to write a Rebel tune
when peace is declared and the fighting is through
I want to write a ballad
    about rebels bold and gallant
but I guess I’ll write about booze

But I guess I’ll write about booze

But I guess I’ll write about booze

But I guess I’ll write about booze

60 years? The Israelis didn't take Gaza or the West Bank until 1967. Before that it was held by Egypt and Jordan...

Were you not aware that the land was predominantly Palestinian until the gangs of Zionists, which were the precursor to the IDF, used violence to expel the inhabitants? Were you not aware Palestinians weren't allowed to buy, rent, or even work on land purchased via the Jewish Land Fund; deeds purchased from non-Palestinians mind you? Were you not even aware that one of the major centers of industry was Hafia, a city once one of the most populated of all of Palestine with Palestinians? Egypt and Jordan never held Palestine in reality. It was an Ottoman property until the empire was divided. Do you know what the Mcmahon-Hussein agreement? Or the Sykes Picot agreement stated? Or the Balfour Declaration? Do you know your history of the region at all?

The Palestinian economy was sabotaged by the Zionist movement of the early twentieth century to empower the state of Israel while quelling ALL local resistance. It's merely history now.

In truth, most Americans aren't aware of this stuff.

I really didn't become aware of it until I read a book called, "Blood Brothers" by a Palestinian named Elias Chacour. Excellent reading. Very sad.

    McMahon?? Who was McMahon??

Sir Henry McMahon was the High British Commissioner of Egypt, a top level diplomat if you wish. The agreement was a series of letters between Sherif Hussein and the British Government and in the letters the British government guarenteed Palestine would be ruled by Palestinians and Arab nations, previously under Ottoman control, were to ruled by Arab governments. Little known to the Arabs, the Western Powers were actually going to control the newly freed lands, but Russia underwent its communist revolution and told the Arab leaders who were to benefit from the McMahon-Hussein Correspondance.

Arafat wasn't even born when Zionists were plotting to take land in that part of the world. Get a grip.

I'm very much aware of the history of the region. I studied it in university and I live in Tel Aviv...and when I say Tel Aviv, I mean where the educated people live that don't bring God into territorial disputes.

Zionists were settling Israel long before WW1, before the British Mandate. Most of the land was bought and paid for, and most aspired to become Ottoman citizens. Part of the whole "religion" of Zionism was to "work the land" and that meant not using the labor of others to do it. That meant alot of arab farm laborers lost their jobs when the land was sold to Jews. The Zionists that came to Israel back then were ideological secular socialists, and not the yodeling, orange-clad religious fanatic facists that hijacked the name and cut down olive orchards in Hebron and Prime Ministers in Tel Aviv today.

That being said, those guys still brought the biases of early 20th Century Eastern Europe with them and were at best as patronizing to Arabs as the British were. And most of them came here naively thinking there was going to be no problems. When these farms and towns were attacked, Jews began to retaliate and form militias, and many of them were *hung* by the British for doing so.

There were as many as 5 different "armies" operating in the underground, and most of them had large ideological differences, not unlike Palestenians are facing today. The reason they survived at all was because Ben-Gurion ruled with an iron fist and told everyone that the Haggannah was the "offical" army and everyone was welcome to join and if they opposed it they would be arrested or killed. It's also why the British and the US and the UN dealt with him: he was in charge.

In '48 when Ben-Gurion declared statehood, they were attacked. By half the Arab world. Lots of Arab families fled, thinking it would be quickly over and they could go back home. Others were compelled to leave because their Jewish neighbors were less than neighborly, and right or wrong viewed them as enemies.

But plenty stayed, especially in the north, near Haifa. In fact, the area is largely Arab today. You know there are over a million Arabs inside the Green Line who are voting citizens, right?

Not only did Israel win in '48, but Gaza and the West Bank were occupied by Egypt and Jordan, and it stayed that way until the next major war in '67, when Israel took that as well.

Smart people thought Israel would use the land to sue for a permanent peace, but unfortunately, as it is in most times, it wasn't the smart people who were in power.

And anyway, around the time of Balfour, MY great-grandfather was being deported to New Orleans by Black and Tans for IRA activities. Whatever injustice he suffered then (deportation, imprisonment, loss of family lands, torture) still doesn't justify killing people in Belfast or London because of what happened several generations ago. Northern Ireland is here to stay whether they like it or not, and most of the people are Queen-loving protestants. Big deal.

I suspect Azadre, that you have never been here. Maybe you should visit. I used to think all the books and news I read, and university classes I took told me what I needed to know. They don't.
