What do you think of him?

How would you rank his movies?

    1. A Clockwork Orange

    2. tie between Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut (extremely underrated)

    3. Full Metal Jacket

    4. The Shining

Haven't seen the others, so I can't rank them.

The man is truly a genius. All his films were ahead of its time.

Always thought he was a tad over-rated myself, but my rankings of the movies I've seen are -

    1. Shining
    2. Full Metal Jacket
    3. 2001 Space Odyssey
    4. Eyes Wide Shut
    5. Clockwork Orange

#1 has to be Dr. Strangelove. My favorite movie of all time.

I noticed "Dr. Strangelove" wasn't on the OP's list. If you haven't seen it and you are a fan of Kubrick's you should right away.

Some other good ones I would add are "Paths of Glory" and "Spartacus".

What astonishes me, considering the impact Kubrick had, is how few films he actually made. The other incredible thing? He was nominated for the Oscar as best director only 4 times and never won, which is ludicrous, IMO. Here's the complete list:

"The Day of the Fight" (1951)

    "The Flying Padre" (1951)

    "The Seafarers" (1953)

    "Fear and Desire" (1953)

    "Killers Kiss" (1955)

    "The Killing (1956)

    "Paths of Glory" (1957)

    "Spartacus" (1960)

    "Lolita" (1962)

    "Dr. Strangelove" (1963)

    "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968)

    "A Clockwork Orange" (1971)

    "Barry Lyndon" (1975)

    "The Shining" (1980)

    "Full Metal Jacket" (1987)

    "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999)

One of my favorite directors, as well. Starting with The Killing, Kubrick uncorked a string of superb films. They are all outstanding, IMO, with some standing out more than others (pun intended!), for different reasons. The Killing was his first film not financed by relatives and friends, and remains one of the very best film noir flicks ever created during the heyday of the genre.

Eyes Wide Shut has some of the most beautiful nude women's bodies ever to grace the cinema screen...... and is still the most boring crap I ever sat through.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb ....
is in my all time top 10.

I like that Kubrick coxed the biggest stars of the time and Warners Bros. to make a $70 million dollar art film.

I like that it has a dream logic that stumps the crap out of Joe Popcorn.

I like how the female characters in the film save Dr. Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) from himself.

I like how conspiracy theorist think it's an Illuminati film.

I love the technical mastery displayed by Kubrick.

    ...and Kidman's ass.

All great points (especially the last!). I know a bunch of people who didn't care for the flick, but I'm not one of them. I wouldn't call it one of his best, but it's damn good, IMO.

I remember watching it when it came out and the film just blew me away. One of the things about it that people often seem to overlook is how realistic looking Kubrick made the battle to retake the airbase. It's a window into what he did years later with Full Metal Jacket.

Like the scene showing the pool table where the balls kept being in different places during the character's conversation.

Or the scene in the bathroom where you could see the cameraman in the mirror. :)

Think of it less as a thriller mystery and more as a yuppie couples movie, it's a little more appealing. Also, the most interesting thing Cruise and Kidman ever did together.
