ok i posted earlier and it turned into whether or not it was honorable to tank. what i'm saying is do yall think there is anyway we will ever get the stadium thing passed while we are losing. people in houston like winners and as long as we are content to just rebuild and everything do we have any chance of keeping the rockets?
I don't think the Rockets' record will affect the stadium referenda. I think the vote was about money and will continue to be. Whether the team is bad or good, the reason why a town would want it to stay is because it produces business (plus it will soothe Houston's inferiority complex). The team's performance may affect some people's votes, but I don't think it will swing the referendum.
Everyone here should root for the Titans to win the Super Bowl. The pain of seeing the no-longer-Oilers hoisting the trophy will make thousands of Houstonians come out to the polls to vote for the next Rockets arena referendum.
Will, I couldn't agree more. I followed and supported the Oilers back in the days when they were 2-12, 2-14, 3-11, 4-10, etc. The majority of the players on the Titans are guys I've been fans of since they started their careers with the Oilers. It is really galling now to see them in Tennessee. Now, Houston gets to start over with an expansion team that will be sorry for who knows how long. If the Rockets leave, I just may not follow pro sports anymore.
The Oilers WERE just as good when they were here in Houston. They had just come off of appearing in 7 straight playoffs with their roster regularly having the most players in the pro bowl. That's the sad part of it all. It's not like Bud Adams was a horrible owner in the sense of not paying top dollar for players. His payroll was consistently one of the highest in the league. Always sought to put a super bowl contender on the field. He was just a bad owner in the civic sense, which I don't really care too much for. Now, it takes a billion dollars just to get an expansion team back to Houston. I'm rooting for a Titans superbowl with my main man Bruce Mathews leading the way. "Houston Oilers! Houston Oilers! Houston Oilers #1!"
I don't think the winning will be a concern. I will be surprised if a stadium gets approved period. The job done by Gary Polland and Paul Bettencourt, aided by Chuck Watson was one that will be remembered for years to come. Les Alexander had offered to pay half the cost and cost overruns, plus the parking. If I'm not mistaken the Spur owners are paying 20% on their new arena. Stern has told Les when his contract is up he will have the league's permission to move. Now if you can pick up and go to a new arena with no money out of your pocket or stay and pay. What do you do?? The answer is Houston builds a new arena for the Rockets, with the GOP chairman againest it with his slush fund money it will never pass. To answer your question, I don't think the winning or losing will matter.
The Rockets have something like 3 or 4 more years left on their "Summit" lease. If they're not winning by then, then they don't deserve one. (And they should resign a lease here in Houston, of course.) They don't have to win another championship, but they need to show steady improvement every year to get the public behind them and a new arena. My personal feeling is that they should get one, but that the deal that failed was rushed together and seemingly rammed down the public's throat, which gives them a sense that someone is trying to get one over on them. What I don't like is that the Rocket organization has been talking to Baltimore for a year, but throw together a ragtag proposal for their own city and just rushed with it way too much. ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem.
I heard this somewhere, and I dont know if its true or not. But what the mayor is trying to do is take out some money allocated to the football stadium and give it to les. There probably is not going to be another vote if this happens. Right now les and the mayor are just concerned about whether that would be legal or not.
Will, in all honesty and with all due respect to your opinion, I can safely say that I will never, EVER root for the Tennessee Traitors and their owner, Mr. Scumbag himself, Bud "do you like my rug" Adams. I don't believe seeing them win the Super Bowl will do anything for passing an arena referendum here. Grant you, I don't know what will, but that won't do it. It just isn't our team anymore, and people here just don't care. This city needs a huge attitude adjustment! PS: I was rooting for Buffalo last weekend. Why? It's NOT just for the Rockets, Comets, and Thunderbears. Think of the NCAA regionals who refuse to play at the Compaq Center because there is no parking available in the daytime. The people who don't want the arena have never traveled out of the city limits and been to a "real" arena. I've been to Phoenix, Cleveland and other cities and know what a state of the art arena can look like. Having said that the vote will probably never pass because of all of the backward thinking in this city. What a shame. Old School
