With the amount of money the spurs have, many people are saying get either Jason Kidd or Jermaine O'Neal Well today on Around the Horn they started talking about the possiblity of the spurs getting a PJ Brown and then, the next year, getting Kevin Garnett. They also discussed this a little bit on PTI. So my queations 2 you are these: 1- Can the Spurs get KG? 2- If they do, who could beat the Spurs, If anybody.????
If they sign PJ Brown and still want Garnett, it'd require signing Brown to a one year deal. Would he go for that? Not unless it was, oh, a max offer than blew everything else out of the water; he could get much more from another team over the long-term, and deservedly so. Garnett would be tough to get, though, because of how much he currently makes. Is he going to want to take a huge pay cut from $20+ million? Not even the Spurs would have that kind of cap room. And, having just won a title, are fans going to accept a year of quasi-noncompetitiveness on the off-chance that they might sign Kevin Garnett? (or Kobe Bryant, or Tracy McGrady, should he opt out...) This free agent class isn't that bad, and if you can get one superstar and another good player, then that's what they should do. But if they strike out - which I really can't see happening, they did just win the title, after all - then it might be something to consider.
Spurs: wait til the 2004 offseason? Basically i picked this off of page 2's daily quickie. the idea is that the spurs should just do minor adjustments and hoard their cap for the 2004 season when Garnett is a FA and Kobe and McGrady can opt out of their contracts....it seems possible...i mean if they can just bypass a year w/o a ring for a string of consecutive titles i bet they would do it...... Duncan and Garnett.....or Kobe....or Mcgrady....lets hope for the Rockets' (as well as the other teams in the league) sake it won't happen.
No way KG would ever take such a paycut. The only way I could see the Spurs having a remote shot at KG in 2004 would be for them to sign a free agent (Kidd, JO'Neal) this summer and then offer that free agent and Parker to Minnesota in a sign and trade for KG the following summer. That way Minnesota would get something in return for KG so they would be interested in doing the S&T. It's hard to see KG bluffing McHale into thinking that KG would actually give up his grandfathered status under the cap. And it's just as hard seeing the Spurs ship out a player who signed with them the year before...to Minnesota.
Even if they sign a 'placeholder' free agent to a one year deal to attempt to preserve some of that cap room they will still have to pay Stephen Jackson and Speedy Claxton this summer if they want to keep them. That will eat into the available cap room. In addition that would be in 2004 that the Spurs again dispose of a 1st round pick instead of using it in order to save the cap room. KG's grandfathered status under the cap realistically prevents him from signing outright with another team. It's hard to see Kobe leaving LA for anywhere...especially a situation in which he again has to share the ball with a dominant post player. As for McGrady I would guess that he'd prefer to remain in Orlando as the man instead of playing 2nd star to TD. The best course of action for the Spurs is to add a star player this summer.
If the Spurs land KG than why bother. That team would be nearly impossible to beat. They would easily win 70+ games and win the finals every year until TD or KG start to decline. It wont happen though for the reasons that Mr.Spur stated.
I don't understand why KG wouldn't the paycut to go to another team, or even from Minnesota. Is Minnesota actually going to give him an extention similar to his current contract!? I mean I know that the current max would be a paycut for KG, but is he really going to get a raise from his current contract? If so, that is crazy.
If I would be in the position of KG I would take a paycut. With the money he earned in the last few years he can still live in heaven for the rest of his life. What is all the money worth when there is not much more left to sign any other decent players around you that won't help you reach the finals or even the second round? He can't eat money and he cannot buy a ring. I would play for less. But in this richie rich world we are living where money seems more important then fame and glory - who wonders...........
I'm not sure Duncan's and Garnett's games would match. Garnett would be a much better partner for Shaq or Kobe or TMac - guys who want to score.
Why would Garnett want to go share an already small pond with an already big fish? If it's a title that he must have, why not go to LA? It would increase his visibilty a thousand fold, or why not go to Orlando, grant hill ought to be retired by then, and McGrady garnett would be guaranteed to make it to the finals every single year?
Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan. That would be scary. Dragon167, the whole NBA would be screwed! Please Spurs. Don't do that. Just get Jason Kidd or Michael Olowokandi. They would be awesome. I don't know who would shoot though....they both like to share.
