Well he did hit the shot to clinch their first illegitimate (half)title. Give credit where it's due.

Arguably their last one when half the Suns were suspended a game and Tim Donaughy called a game. I wouldn't go there. But most of us would.

this is true. avery was a fan favorite for the spurs. and our beloved kenny smith and vernon maxwell and mario elie deserve that same love for the emotional leadership.

Actually, if memory serves correctly, I do think we won one game against the Lakers that year (game 3 at home, I think), which of course was the ill-fated Pippen-Barkley-Olajuwon triumvirate year.

    That's just ridiculous.

I was a BIG fan of Avery when he was a player. I liked how he played, and I liked how he was a player-coach kinda guy.

But retiring his #??? I'm not sure who the Spurs have retired, but I don't think Avery is on the level of Gervin, Robinson, Duncan (one day), etc.

I like Avery. I have no problems with Avery (other than being a Spur, and the coach of the Mavericks).

But I don't think he warrants getting a number retired.

The Bulls won six titles, and they only have two numbers retired from that Dynasty. Our friend Scottie, and some other dude.

I'm glad for AJ, but it's kind of weird that this will happen while he coaches the Spurs biggest rival at the same time. I don't think they do it this season if the Mavs had played and knocked the Spurs out of the playoffs a few months ago.

The more I think about it the stranger it seems.

And we had Game 1 in the bag before Quitten coughed up the ball.

You're right on, I am positive we won one game in that series when Pip was with us in '99.

This is ridiculous...he was an average-good point guard who happens to have an excellent reputation off the court. Does that mean he should get his jersey retired? No.

I remember laughing hysterically when a viewer suggested that the Clippers should retire Eric Piatkowski's number on a broadcast, but now that seems plausible.

I think he was a great player for the spurs, but I dont think his career would be awesome to retire his number, its like we retired mario elie, robert horry, maxwell, etc, they are role players, they were great players.
