They do it again...draft players that 1 may not even help the team, and 2 may not even MAKE the team. "The 28th pick in the 2001 NBA DRAFT go to the Spurs and they have selected...Avery Johnson Jr.!! A 5'11" guard. Now i don't know about you, but i thought their problem was not being able to defend the BIG guards in the West. So to solve this problem they draft Avery Johnson Jr., and okay he has a better jumper than Avery....but so does my sister!! And to further the madness, they draft a 6'11" 203lbs. center that oh yeah can play small forward. Why not draft a small forward or trade for one...Houston had no problem doing this!! The Spurs will be a lottery team next season, because the coach is garbage, Big Dave is a girl, AJ can't shoot over a zone, DA wants the max, Danny Ferry can't play defense, Sean Elliot will be a broadcaster, Antonio will continue to be the back up, and Pop will continue to hoodwink the Alamo City. Dat's Right!! ------------------ "The Rockets Fan Cometh..."
Spurs fan I take it? Azim da Dream ------------------ "Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease." - Geroge W. Bush, commenting on the troubled continent, to reporters in Sweden
Basketball fan...i just think that teams that don't help themselves to beat the best are doomed to lose 0-4 again. You have to keep moving in the direction of progress not just mask a young player with the mold of the current. When you have teams that keep a steady flow of pieces to the Champs like the Bucks just did...you have to better your team to win, or prepare to watch the finals at Hooters. ------------------ "The Rockets Fan Cometh..."
wth are you talking about? Tony Parker was said to be the best PG prospect in the draft. his potential is equal to that of Griffin i believe. I like their starting 5 next year if they move DA to the 3, start Daniels at OG, and put Parker/Porter at the point. Their collapse vs LA was mostly mental, and i'm sure they will provide the biggest threat to the Lakers reign next year. ------------------
I expect that David will sign for less to help re-sign Anderson, then he will BURN the Spurs and sign somewhere else. They will proceed to lose Elliot to retirement, and Johnson and Ferry to free agency. Spurs lineup for 2001-02. Danniels Jackson Walker Duncan unhappy Robinson Oh yeah, that's a great team... ------------------ Protrolls.com! "I want to be like Olajon." -Sagana Diop has the right idea...
Um, you mean you hope. DA's return is pretty much up to SA. Fine for Elliott and AJ to go. Ferry will stick around as no one is going to give him the MCE. Oh yeah, that's a great take... ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net
This is the #28 pick. The Spurs manage to pick up a highly regarded point guard prospect, one which is regarded as the best in the draft at #28...how is that bad? Daniels is not the best point around. The coaching staff is set on him at the 2, while playing some 1 on occassion. The Spurs can't afford to have him on the bench, but they definitely will need a better ballhandler. Parker's 6'2". The TNT info was wrong. Parker, Wallace, and Jefferson were the Spurs' targets in the draft. They had a deal for Toronto's #17 to land Parker, but that fell through. That's right, they were trying to deal up to land this guy. I will say this...the Spurs' draft MO has always been to unload the late first round pick and that guaranteed contract, usually for exisiting talent. The fact that they kept it and drafted a 19 year old says enough if you follow the team. The player-personnel department is run by Sam Schuler, who also held that position with the Warriors in the early 90s when they had a number of successful middle to late 1st round picks (Sprewell being the most prominent). I haven't seen Schuler this excited about a pick in SA, ever. The Spurs will have plenty of cap space left over AFTER DA and DRob re-sign. DRob doesn't have to take a small deal to fit in DA, but he does in order for the Spurs to fit in another large free agent contract. I'd like to dream and see Finley coming, but that's just as much a dream...well, less a dream than that lineup posted above by a Rockets fan. I see the Spurs making a play for Eddie Robinson in free agency, then probably adding another decent swingman to the bench along with another decent backup PF/C. The DA at 3 concept has been thrown around, but I don't see Pop going with that next season. He went with it during the WCF out of necessity. The Spurs will reload and should improve the starting small forward and backup center spots. I'm not sure what Mo Dawg is complaining about...things are going well in SA. ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net [This message has been edited by MrSpur (edited June 29, 2001).]
how can you say things are going well in san antonio? not only did the spurs get swept (embarrasingly, at that!) by the lakers... 1) they did not address the issue of not being able to defend larger guards. 2) they still plan on bringing back an utterly useless point guard (avery johnson). especially against a zone defense. 3) they have NO starting 3 4) they have a terrible coach (refuses to make game time adjustments. dave for 30 minutes against la?) 5) their best backup big man is 6'6" (malik rose) 6) antonio daniels still can't get out of pop's doghouse and onto the court @ the point. 7) their defensive "protector" is an aging, back-ailing, david robinson (soft as tissue). 8) sean elliot is retiring 9) jaren jackson is still on payroll, but not on playroll 10) uncertain as to whether derek anderson's shoulder will reheal 100% 11) uncertain as to whether derek will resign (said he WILL NOT give a hometown deal) 12) lacking youthful outside shooting (tp is VERY old, kerr has splinters, da has a separated shoulder, etc.) things are far from fine in san anto. and it's the conceited, arrogant attitude spurs' fans have that will keep their team from realizing the depth of doo doo they are in!
Just explained it. Not the only ones. I guess better to watch your team in the playoffs than otherwise. Finley was handled well in the Dallas series. If you are referring to Kobe, who exactly handles him well defensively? Actually, no. AJ is gone. That's what an offseason and cap space are for. So he should've played him through foul trouble though he was not getting any calls? If Pop was a terrible coach, he'd be gone. Walker played well when Rose was out. With the Spurs cap space it won't be hard to add another PF/C to the bench. That might change this next season. Perhaps they bring in someone else in to start and run AD as the 3rd guard. The last time I checked, they have the cap flexibility to do what they want. Of course, you have AJ coming back when he is not. Soft? Yet how is he soft if he is playing with an ailing back? Poor Spurs, they have David Robinson as their center... See response to your point (3). That's fine. Spurs have significant cap flexibility even with him around. Uncertain? The guy returned during the playoffs. And who is going to offer him more? Even if somehow his price was the max, the Spurs can bring him back, resign DRob for one year, and still have the cap space to address the 3 spot. Yet DA is youthful, no? AD and him shot 40% on 3s this last season, but I guess that doesn't count. Things are just fine in SA. It's conceited, arrogant, and ill-informed fans of other teams who don't realize how little they know about teams other than their own, apparently. I guess if you think the hypothetical lineup given above is the Spurs lineup next season, this concept is shocking. ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net [This message has been edited by MrSpur (edited June 29, 2001).]
for bigger guards, see: jason kidd (gone to east now, but point is the same) kobe bryant (must at least contain him. your argument that "no one handles him" is weak.) sam cassell (in east, but still gave spurs fits, along w/ray allen) michael finley (true, you held him in check in the playoffs. but it wasn't the guards who deserved the credit. had juwann shown up, the spurs' post players would not have been able to help nearly as much.) as a matter of fact, just list any tempo-dominating guard vs. the spurs. like allen iverson. like any guard that knows how to score in the paint, since the spurs perimeter defense is VERY overrated. it's your interior defense that's been good.
oh yea, with this OFFSEASON & CAP SPACE, who do you think the spurs are gonna target? so far, all i've heard in the way of 3's for the spurs to target has been shandn andersn. that's directly from the sa express news. that has been the only talked about 3 for the spurs to pursue. the rumors of eddie robinson are contained to the internet. i've seen no mention of it any other place. so, Mr.Spur, who are the spurs targeting to fill the 3 spot and shore up their backcourt???
AJ may want to come back, but the Spurs don't want him back. Cassell, Bryant, Iverson, etc...are going to get theirs. Period. Christie was supposedly 1st team defense and look how well he did versus Bryant. The rules changes will make defending any player easier. Don't forget that the handchecking rules have been relaxed some. ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net
and my comment about dave has nothing to do with his willingness to play through pain. it has EVERYTHING to do with his willingness to "bring it" when it counts...which he never has done. notice how mutombo at least fought his ground against shaq. did you, or have you ever - HONESTLY - ever seen dave do that? esp. against shaq? or did he punk out with reaching fouls, like he always does??? and regarding derek anderson, are you silly enough to think that just because he came back against la, meant that he was 100% healthy? do you really think he was playing @ 100%??? 3rd degree separated shoulders DO NOT HEAL in 2 weeks. they almost always become chronic. and they often never heal back to 100%. do your research, Mr.Spur.
ROTFLM muthafuchin AO!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! yea, there are no bad coaches that have jobs in the nba. if he were a bad coach, he'd be gone. is he gonna fire himself and hire a good coach? is peter holt gonna fire his gm & coach? nope and nope. pop is a TERRIBLE coach. what he should have done is tried different players to at least "slow down" shaq. samaki, shawnelle, et al, are far from nba stars. but they are big enough to put some fatigue on shaq. instead, who did pop put on shaq when dave was on the bench for 18 minutes per game??? MALIK ROSE. 6'6" MALIK ROSE. who got obliterated. yea, that was the right move to make. oh, and don't come back with that bullsh!t response of..."oh, if you could do better why aren't you coaching" cause 1) you don't know me, 2) you don't know what i do & 3) even the president of the united states makes obvious mistakes that common people can point out and be right about.
A reasonable selection would be Eddie Robinson. As for Anderson, I don't see it. He wasn't interested in '99. Popovich runs a tight ship. This is normal for the Spurs. Anytime info about a player the Spurs are interested in comes out, the leak is from the other team involved. As for ERob, the Spurs can offer him more money than Charlotte and a starting spot. There are a number of free agents out there, a limited number of teams with middle class exceptions available and a limited number of teams with any cap space. In addition, there are a number of teams looking to dump contracts to avoid the luxury tax. The bottomline is that the Spurs have plenty of options. I can assure you that Jackson and Walker in the starting lineup is not one of them. ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net
Robinson had plenty of success versus O'Neal during O'Neal's first 5 years in the league. O'Neal is the best center in the NBA, in the prime of his career. He was, otherwise he would not have come back. I see. Are you a MD? If he was good enough to play, it must not have been that bad. I do. Perhaps you should try too. ------------------ It's a cool site, this clutchcity.net
What? You don't think that Holt can fire Popovich? I would assume that you realize that most of the Spurs GM/player-personnel operations are handled by Sam Schuler and RC Buford. But of course, you knew that, eh? F-o-u-l t-r-o-u-b-l-e. So what? He went with it. If they are not comfortable with that and/or Walker, then they have the flexibility to make changes. I notice that you have yet to dispute the fact that the Spurs have significant cap flexibility this summer. Since you are the 'expert' on the Spurs situation, is this wrong? Or how does that not matter? And he's still POTUS and you are still sitting at home rubbing one out every morning, noon, and night. [This message has been edited by MrSpur (edited June 29, 2001).]
Mr. Spur, Where do i start?... 1)I think the first thing to say is you have to be a person who NEVER played basketball, because for you to think players only play when they are 100% or 80% is truly stupid!! Do you recall Eric Snow, Derek Fisher, Iverson, and pretty much any other NBA player that comes back early for the LOVE of playing? I have had 2 3rd degree shoulder injuries of the same type, and i was to have surgery and at least 6-8 weeks off...i was on the court in 4 days. This injury feels like you just don't have the strength in the shoulder to play at a high level, but you can still play. DA will either be like Chris Webber and his shoulder or like Carl Herrera and HIS shoulder. 2)How much cap room are you talking about? $8-10 million?... $6-8 million?... $4-6 million?... because really after you sign Dave who probably won't take less than $8 million, sign DA who won't take less $6 million, AJ who YOU know will be back (Parker is insurance for the Spurs) and will eat up at least $5 million, Ferry who will get $3-5 million...where is the cap room to give to a free agent? Plus WHO wants to go to the Spurs? Ferry and DA only signed cause the Cavs and Clippers sucked, and they were looking for a way out. 3)Don't let the media in San Antonio fool you...Pop calls the shots and that is why it's hard to get rid of him. San Antonio had no problem firing Hill and Lucas, and Pop had no problem stepping in like a hoe in a men's locker room to hold the team on lock. The only reason why he is still coach is because he won the *Championship. How did he get there? By waiting until Hill could win no more games with his then team of Vernon Maxwell, Dominque Wilkins, a broke Dave, and team that played its way to the lottery to get Tim Duncan. Once the team was healthy he took the interm from his name and has been the Alamo City Pimp ever since. 4)You truly know in your heart of hearts that the Spurs are not trying to sign any free agents, because the Spurs think that the Lakers are a fluke!! This is it for the team...they can't get any free agents like the Bulls couldn't land Jones or McGrady last year, because NO ONE wants to play for Pop (you catch the theme here). You mean to tell me that the Spurs couldn't work a deal to get Brand or Ref or Bibby or Griffen or Marbury or Morris or Cook or Haywood or any person traded so far!! Like i said before the Spurs are a lottery team, because everyone in the West saw HOW to beat the Spurs and if the same team comes back lead by the bench mob of Jackson, Kerr, Walker, Porter, Rose, Scott, and the rest of the players with NO signifacant palying minutes and impact...the same zone that you put on Shaq, you can put on Duncan. ------------------ "Basketball is truth, and J-Dub is a lie..." I know basketball and most GM's don't...sometimes the best rooster move is no move at all. What makes your team successful is truly knowing when it's time to make a change and who is the player to help you do it.
