Man, I just looked at the Spurs cap situation going forward and it seems like they are in the perfect situation to reload. Next season they only have $53M tied up. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/san_antonio.htm Granted $44M of that is tied up in the big three and Bowen, and they are getting older (even though Parker is only 25). It just seems like they are in the ideal position to reload.
they're already in a position to dominate this year's playoffs. sorry folks, but it's looking more and more like the road to the Finals will go through San Antonio...again. the way they are dominating PHX, i can't see anyone stopping them. New Orleans? nope. Utah? They'll get dismantled. Lakers? They don't play the defense that stops San Antonio.
I think alot of the Spurs players are retiring in the off-season and will probably have some younger faces around....but with that being said all they need is Duncan and those other two guys with Pop running the show, they'll be fine.
The Spurs will be championship contenders as long as Duncan is playing. They've got it made right now: 1. Great defense 2. Big man that plays well in the high post AND low post 3. Point guard who can finish around the basket, is smart, and knock down j's 4. Slashing swingman who doesn't settle for jumpers and can finish drives 5. Great balance of defensive specialists and shooting specialists If the Rockets go out in the first, I'll be all for the Spurs winning it all. I hate the Lakers... because of Kobe. I don't want him winning after the bull he pulled in the offseason. He doesn't deserve to win with the Lakers. I hate the Hornets... because they act like they are defending champions. Chris Paul is one of those players that throw tantrums if things aren't going his way. I expect that in a pickup game, not in the NBA. I hate Utah. San Antonio is supposed to be hated, but they've got nice people over there. Their team plays pretty fair (except for Bowen; and Ginobili to an extent, but he's cut down on flopping).
This is nothing more than 2001 all over again...except this isn't the Lakers pounding everyone into a submission, its the Spurs...Spurs will end up 12-0 going into the NBA Finals....or close to that...like 12-1 or 12-2.
They can still only spend the same amount on FA's as the Rockets. Now the 76ers, they are in a real good cap situation.
The spurs management has been one of the best in basketball, but the main reason that they have been a contender for the last decade is because of the ping pong balls that got them Tim Duncan. A Tim Duncan caliber player does not fall into your laps every year. The Spurs' window of opportunity is 3 years at max. After Duncan starts to decline, they'll have to rebuild just like everyone else.
