For all you old school folks that remember the funk-ska powerhouse that was Sprawl in the late 80's early 90's, they will be playing a reunion gig with a bunch of other local bands from that era on Friday (tomorrow) at Fitzgerald's and they will also be at Rudyard's on Sunday. It may never happen again, and should be good times. Peace, Cagey Vet
I saw Sprawl a few times back in the day. Sure would like it if Ten Hands were on that reunion bill...
I was going to try and bring up my original thread on this yesterday, but search is no longer available. The wife and I are driving to Houston (from Austin) this afternoon for the show. Can't wait...
dang. hopefully there are more shows. my 3 favorite houston bands were de schmog, the mike gunn and sprawl. (sorry zz-top)
Bliss was set to do it. Scott backed out. Or at least that's what I heard from the organizers. I can't believe I'm going to see Sprawl, de Schmog and Fleshmop tonight. Dream come true.
My favorite Houston band was Planet Shock/Aftershock. Aftershock played a reunion show not too long ago. It just isn't the same anymore. Maybe getting older combined with the fact that the rock-rap thing is long since over had a lot to do with it. There was another band that I can't remember their name for the life of me. It was a 3 piece band that played that fast & super loud punk. They were hispanic guys and their motto was "100% Vato-Billy". Can any of you remember who that was? they used to play at Emo's a lot.
I booked Planet Shock a few times at Catal Huyuk. I think the Vato-Billy band you're talking about is Flaming Hellcats (whose members post here), but I could be remembering that wrong.
Nope. But I'll have a shaved head, jeans and brown boots and I'll be out on the balcony smoking a lot. Find me and say hi.
No. I don't know who Mark is, but he wasn't an owner of Catal. It was opened by Wes Hicks and Phil Bergeron. I came in a few months later in a partnership of five or six people, but none of us was named Mark.
I miss living in Houston...especially this weekend...Wish I could be there tonight & tomorrow. Still have a scar on my forehead from the Bayou Pigs/Cinco Dudes/Pain Teens show at Numbers in 91.
Maybe I'm confusing 2 different places...Catal Huyuk came around the time I left Houston, only went there once
That's them. Who posts here? Those shows were freaking awesome. Always had a blast...especially when they'd open for Shock.
Can't remember the name(s). They've got a big, colorful Flaming Hellcats sig and post uber conservative stuff in the D&D sometimes. Flaming Hellcats were one of my big mistakes as a booker. I remember them coming by with a tape (pretty sure before they had played out, definitely before they had a following) and I didn't book them because we'd been losing out a lot on new, unknown bands. If memory serves I offered them an opening slot with no guaranteed money and they went elsewhere and started drawing big. Live and learn.
