[SportsRadio 610] Morey Interview: Barry to Play Point Forward http://www.sportsradio610.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=2745029 Summary: 1. Barry signed with the Rockets in order to play point forward. 2. He's working on the big trade right now, but things may not materialize until later in the season. 3. With so many guaranteed contract, there will be a deal involving some of the players with smaller roles and smaller contracts during the offseason. 4. Dear Buddy Baker, You are ****ed. We have you in a chockehold and we ain't letting go. Just tap out and make it easier on yourself. Your friend, Daryl
Well it looks like the Rockets organization is pretty disapointed that Carl didn't follow their medical advice on his knee over the off-season. I would guess that his agent probably thought it kill any possible offers he would recieve. It probably would have. The problem from the rockets side is he is asking for an extended contract and we don't know what the results of necessary knee surgery will be. Compound that with the fact that if he has the surgery now it will cause him to miss part of the season that he is now asking the rockets to pay him for. Agents suck. He should have had the surgery, taken a nice shorter contract from us with a player option on the end, and then EARNED a long term big contract. As it is now, his agent has talked him into trying to strong arm his team into GIVING him a big contract.
Jeez people, we CAN NOT sign and trade him. I think this has been said like a billion freakin times. Sorry to be such an A hole, just in panic trying to get packed for my flight to puerto vallarta mexico for some r&r! Yes, im a last minute guy! I do it to myself!
recap: MOrey from Vegas Summer League Rox are excited. Team is better today than it was before Barry. LOL, after scola and Barry, do you call RC and Pop and go "Haha, nyehhhhh. " Brent wanted to go where his offensive skillset would be better utilized. Most natural at 2, but can play spot minutes at 3 and 1. Will there be more moves? they are looking at minor trades to shuffle the roster and balance things out, not anticipating rookies to jump ahead of rotation of vets. Otherwise, same answer: always looking to improve, always looking for impact additions, more options at trade deadline, blah blah blah They like the NBDL, no substitute for playing. What does brooks need to do to break into rotation? how well does he lead, how well does he run team in summer league. Its nice to have competition between good players for the rotation. landry situation: quicker would be nicer, but from an investment view, due diligence is very important, medical info very important. Landry's side thinks this revelation is not so important. No formal deal has been filed. note from sportcasters: he had less bounce post injury. moreY: though he can play on his knee like he did at end of season, a whole 82 game season is a different story. in MOrey we trust in Vegas: "i hear that if black shows up a lot of times, red is due." "the marble has a memory" ----------- I think Morey has the right idea. Stack the team with players with trade value, make a minor deal to balance things out. I just realized something about the Landry situation. The risk is real and legitimate regarding Landry's knee. This injury occured after only a handful of games, and took longer to return, and returned with less impact. And then taking into account his college injury history, do we really want to overspend on a guy whose initial production was based on his athleticism, lack of scouting and adjustment by opposition, and lack of rookie wall? The rookie wall is real, and we don't know how his body will react. Morey wants a return on investment, but how can you forecast his production in 82 games with all these question marks, and without knowledge of his dropoff after the rookie wall? Also, if Landry gets a crazy offer, 4 million or more, and we let him walk, it's not the end of the world. People may cry "WAhhhhh, we're back to Juwan Howard (Scola) with Backup Chuck and a Backup Barry". The difference here is Scola outproduces Howard on the court, but his contract is cheaper by 3 million. Our past rockets teams had money invested in players who did not produce. Can you believe that just 3 years ago we were paying MLE money tied up to Howard AND Stromile Swift? That's why we sucked in the past, too much dead weight. We can get better production from Scola and Hayes at half the cost, then use the money we saved on another rotation guy who pulls their own weight. Good job Morey. If basketball teams were heavyweight boxers with weight restrictions, Morey took the Rockets from an overweight 200 pound boxer with 25% body fat, lost 20 pounds of fat and replaced it with 20 pounds of muscle, and now we have a streamlined coordinated 200 pound boxer with 10% body fat who runs with a mean streak. San Antonio in the past has always been able to be the 200 pound boxer with 7% body fat. Smarter too. But not anymore. With Morey's guidance, we can get down to 7%.
I'm new and I couldn't find the edit function (is there an edit function?) My math was off. i meant 20% gets slimmed down to 10%. Or I meant 30 pounds of fat replaced by 30 pounds of muscle. The math works out both ways. But you get the picture.
Great analysis. You should be Member. Carl is going to have a hard time jumping out of Rocket-land. He will have to nurse that bum knee at a certain stage, and we sure hope that his contract works out for both himself and the Rockets organization. My guess, it's a 4 year, 15 million deal with a team option on the last year, or a 3 year 11 million deal. A slight bit below 4 mil/year is my guess. Just 2 cents. Chris
I just hope it works out w/Carl, cuz he brings that element of athleticism which we really don't have. But as I recall, wasn't his injury just soreness or a result of a bruise? or something to that effect? It's not like he tore anything. I'm definitely no medical expert, but I would think that he'd be fine. If anyone has more info or knowledge,it would greatly be appreciative. Back in my High School playing days, during my senior year, my right knee unexpectantly just swelled as well and I had to miss like 2 weeks or so. After that, i've never had any problems with it. Of course I"m not saying that my injury and Carl's was the same, but I'm just trying to be optismistic.
It was his left knee that was operated on in college and his right knee that he injured last season. What knee does Morey want scoped? Let his agent produce those offers so we can either match or not, screwing around is just causing us to lose opportunities in signing other FAs.
Good point. Now that i recall, it was against Indy when he bumped knees w/someone that kept him out of the lineup for a few weeks. Can't be all that serious. But then again, i'm no expert. I hope it's just Morey trying to lower his value as opposed to having legitimate injury concerns.
Unless the rockets sign Landry to the league minimum contract, any contract he recieves will come out of this years Mid Level Exception money. It is against the CBA to sign and trade a player using MLE money.
Good job by Morey. Landry's agent must be cringing about now. But it's a non-issue except to Les' balance sheet. Landry will be re-signed and the cap number will be just fine for someone in the top eight rotation.
They have been checked. Do you think his agent is stupid? He probably suggested they check his knees just in case. They checked that already and were hoping for no problems so they could tell Morey to **** off. I bet they found minor problems and are covering it up by saying he won't get checked.
Actually, I think we can all agree that his agent is pretty stupid. Moreover, Carl is pretty stupid for picking someone who is inexperienced with NBA contracts. I don't want things to turn bitter between Carl and the organization. I think if Landry had just checked his knees, he would get a good deal. I can't see Morey screwing him over. I am completely sure that Morey basically said "We want to give you a good deal. We want to give you what you deserve. Check your knees so that things don't get bitter and none of us have to resort to our powers under the CBA." Unfortunately, the agent is an *******. I say give him 4 year and 17M, just like Turiaf. What worries me is if the Lakers offer him the full MLE thinking they'd rather do that than offer Turiaf his money.
When this much money is on the line in a deal, you get your knees checked. There is no other logical thing to do. You need all your cards when negotiating deals like this. This is no game to them, it's their bread and butter.
I cannot see Landry starting over Scola, so why would you pay the backcup more than the starter. It makes no sense to me, he should not get more then 3mil. Now maybe in a year or two he becomes the starter but who knows what will happen between now and then. But in this current situation he shouldn't be paid over 4mil a season for his contributions in only half a season, 42 games to be exact. Then factor in his knee and how much his game changed after he got hurt, wasn't quite the same.
I agree. That is why I've been advocating - and I think it's highly probable - that Landry will a 3 year, 10 million-ish contract. Maybe with a 4th year team option based on his potential for growth alone as compared to Scola, who's pretty much hit his ceiling. I don't like the games Buddy Bakers playing. He screams unprofessionalism on every count. Look, you're a professional athlete whose game is based on athleticism and you have a history of knee problems. And the whole world saw how much your game was affected by a simple "contusion" to your knee. How hard is it to get an arthroscopic? If he'd done it when Morey first requested, he'd probably be close to fully rehabbed by now.
