I was wondering, does anybody have any questions about what any sports team's names mean like I do? If so post questions (and answers) here. I was wondering what an Expo is? Also a Phillie(maybe a Phillidelphian? )?
ex·po [ék sp ] (plural ex·pos) noun exhibition or fair: a large exhibition or internationally sanctioned exposition Hehe... That's what an expo is. Trying to figure out what a Utah Jazz and where you can find a lake in LA.
Nobody ever told me what a Sooner was. Nor an Aggie. I want to know what a Golden Hurricane is, and what is it doing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I can understand a Golden Tornado and all, but tornados aren't golden in Oklahoma.
ag·gie 1 [ággee ] (plural ag·gies) noun See agaten.2 ag·ate [ággt ] (plural ag·ates) noun 1. type of chalcedony: a hard fine-grained form of chalcedony with variously colored bands, markings, and areas of clouding, often used as a gemstone 2. toy marble: a playing marble made of agate or of glass that looks like agate Also called aggie1 Hmm...I don't think that is it. I don't think you should root for a marble. Tar Heel or Tar·heel (plural Tarheels) noun somebody from North Carolina: somebody who comes from or lives in North Carolina
in 1967 montreal held a big event/fair (aka expo). it was pretty damn huge. i don't know when the team was started (don't follow baseball much)...but this event was probably the reasoning for the team name.
bear·cat [báir kàt ] (plural bear·cats) noun See red panda red pan·da (plural red pan·das) noun animal resembling raccoon: a reddish-brown mammal that resembles a raccoon in appearance and lives in forests in the Himalayas and nearby areas of eastern Asia. Latin name Ailurus fulgens Also called panda Also called lesser panda Also called bearcat God bless encarta.
The jazz moved to Salt Lake from New Orleans(Jazz Hotspot of the south). The Lakers moved to L.A. from Minneapolios(land of 10,000 lakes)
An Aggie is a farmer. Hence the full name of the school is Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University. A Sooner is someone who back in the days left "sooner" rather than "later" to stake land in Oklahoma. A Sooner is also a cheater cause he or she left a day earlier. A Tarheel refers to UNC's mascot which is a Ram.
Yeah, I knew that, but shouldn't they have changed their name? I'm not sure, but wasn't Memphis going to change because there are no Grizzlies in Memphis. (well, none that I'm aware of.)
Ok...Lets see. A Sooner will go back to the old days before people settled in Oklahoma. They had a race for land in Oklahoma and some people took off early. Thats how they came up with the name sooners. Well, Thats what one of my teachers said anyways. Could somebody clear this up better?
Tulsa may have had another name, but changed it to be politically correct or they may have been Hurricanes from the beginning. Golden refers to their school colors which are Gold and Blue.
The term "tarheel" dates back to the Revolutionary War wherein the militiamen from North Carolina were described as fighting so resolutely that it was as if their heels were fixed with tar--meaning them unmoveable. Isn't the Expo derived from the world's fair that was in Montreal about the time they came into major league baseball.
Oklahoma's nickname of Sooners comes from the fact that the state is known as the "Sooner State" just like Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State". I found this site through a google search that said that sooners came from "On April 22, 1889, the first day homesteading was permitted, 50,000 people swarmed into the area. Those who tried to beat the noon starting gun were called 'Sooners,' hence the state's nickname. Now the real question is what is a Hoya and what is a Hokie?
