With my brother-in-law throwing very well in Washington, i have been reminded of how superstitious people in sports are. Everyone in the immediate family has now been forced to do everything the same every time he pitches. We eat the same meals, at the same place. We have to watch the game on the same tv doing the same stuff. So far it has worked. In coaching if I win I always where the same shirt and pants. If we lose I change shirt and pant combinations. My shirt for this year had a pretty good winning percentage. What are some of your superstitions with sports?
This isn't my own superstition but one I've always found interesting. Abstaining from sex the night or week before a big competition. I know a lot of people believe it saves their energy but I don't think there's any scientific evidence to this. I remember Wilt Chamberlain saying he sex with two women the night before he scored a 100 points in a game.
I have one superstition: PRACTICE A SH*TLOAD before you play... IT HAS WORKED MOST OF THE TIMES. If you're in UTAH, it makes no difference. A sixth seed will give you a kiss of death.
Your brother in law is a starter for the Nats, do you openly say who it is or do you not want people to specifically know?
well, i'm an all out canucks fan, i don't have other friends that are rockets fans, so i don't have any superstitions there. but for the vancouver canucks (when there is hockey), my buddies at the college and me all go to one guys house, we all have designated chairs, designated food, and all have to wear our jerseys. when i play basketball (my intramurals team won the championship last week AND i helped lead "team canada" to a victory over "the world" in our annual basketball matchup) i wear a black sock on my right foot and a white sock on my left foot. i also wear a white baller band on my right wrist and a black band on my left wrist. since i've done this, my shooting has been much more consistant for some reason. okay, well, i see it on sports channels - so i'm gonna include poker as a sport. when i play poker i keep 4 stacks of chips - two stacks on each side of where i place my cards. i haven't seen anybody do this, but i feel it prevents others from seeing my cards when i glance and also forms a "net", like a soccer net, for the dealer to aim for when tossing my cards - if both cards in texas holdem score on my net, then i have extreme luck.
Playing Hockey - I have to re-tape my sick before every game. Golf - I have to mark my ball with my kids initials.
