What things on the field have forced the various leagues to change their rules...not counting steriods or drug type rule changes I admit this list is bball heavy since that's my fav,,,,don't know soccer, hockey, fusball or cricket enough so pls add, those...lol. can we come up with 50...I'll start
Plays: Dave Casper's 20yr forward fumble FTW Allowable knee downs to close out NFL games after the Eagles funble FTW
Players: Tiger Woods forcing Augusta to change their tees George Mikan and Wilt extending the width of the lane Michael Jordan after '88 series against Boston forcing the illegal defense rules to include regions on the court Hack a Shaq Rule
Coaches Dean Smith's much-copied, four corners eventually causing NCAA to adapt a second clock Rudy, among others, abusing ISO to force the irradication of illegal defense a curious side note is the relaxation of the blocking rule while setting picks in college allowed Bobby Knight to implement his motion offense in the early 70s that so many people copied
Players Last season in the NHL, wasn't there an event that caused an immediate rule change the next day? I never knew what the event was, so hopefully someone can explain it. Teams World Series, Rays vs Phillies rain delay - now Selig changed it to where all playoffs games can't be called until 9 innings are complete. Coaches Was there a rule change involving timeouts you can call to ice the FG kicker? It was becoming an issue last year.
No rule was ever instituted because it backfired on a coach last year and I think more than one this year.
NFL - Bringing back Instant Replay after Vinny Testaverde's head crossed the goal line and it was called a TD that screwed someone out of the playoffs back in like 98 or whenever it was. The immaculate reception was technically illegal. Back then a ball could not be caught by another member of the receiving team if it touched another player. Jack Tatum delivered a huge hit on the play, but the ball clearly touched the other Steeler player before bouncing to Franco Harris.
That douchebag Avery waving his hands in front of the goalie in a "I'm not touching you" kinda way. Later the NHL said that that was unsafe or something.
It was pretty short lived, but remember when Stern decided the refs should call technical fouls on emotion? You couldn't complain about a call at all without getting called for a T. Very short lived though. I guess it was a Rasheed Wallace rule or something.
NCAA banning college football coaches from text messaging recruits after it became pretty popular in the recruiting war. I'm guessing contact via Facebook/Myspace was also prohibited. NFL has gotten much more protective of the QB. I still remember that one Vince Young clip where some guy didn't tackle him because he was worried about getting called for a penalty.
Rules changes because of Wilt Chamberlain: Chamberlain's impact on the game is also reflected in the fact that he was directly responsible for several rule changes in the NBA, including widening the lane to try to keep him farther away from the hoop, institute offensive goaltending and revise rules governing inbounding the ball and shooting free throws.[1][11] Among others, Chamberlain was physically capable of converting foul shots via a slam dunk. When his dunks practically undermined the difficulty of a foul shot, the NBA banned his modus operandi.[1][11] In basketball history, pundits have stated that the only other player who forced such a massive change of rules is 6 ft 10 in Minneapolis Lakers center George "Mr. Basketball" Mikan, who played a decade before Chamberlain and also caused many rule changes designed to thwart so-called "big men".[12] In baseball, the league that won the All-star game has homefield-advantage in the World Series, since 2003 for this: The 2002 All-Star Game, held in Milwaukee, ended in controversy in the 11th inning, when both teams ran out of substitute players available to pitch in relief. At that point, Commissioner Bud Selig, coincidentally a Milwaukee native and former owner of the Brewers, declared the game to end in a tie. The crowd booed and the media were highly critical of this unsatisfying conclusion. To provide additional incentive for victory, Major League Baseball reached an agreement with the players union to award home-field advantage for the World Series to the league that won the All-Star Game, for 2003 to 2004. Since then, the agreement was extended twice, in 2005 and 2006.[38] Previously, home field advantage in the World Series alternated between the two leagues each year.

ncaa BB outlawed dunking the ball because of Lew Alcindor (Kareem) not sure when they allowed it back in though
Player - NHL - "Sean Avery Rule" "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play." The "knee down" was allowed (as a matter of fact, Pisarcik, took a knee on the play prior to the fumble), but the defense had to touch you before you were considered down.
Oh come ON people !!! This is a Rockets board........ How about this.....Rudy T's ISO ball forced the NBA to change their rules on illegal defense, and offense. DD
always forget which tampa WR it was. I was gonna say Jacquez Green. But I remember it happening.. my addition is an owner.. The Ted Stepien rule.. the reason NBA teams can't trade away 1st round picks in consecutive years in the future (he f'ed the Cavs franchise over during his short ownership tenure)
