Hey everyone so I am in my last semester at Texas A&M and will be graduating from Mays Business School. It has come to that time where I need to begin job hunting and I really want to do something correlating with sports marketing with a marketing firm or a local sports franchise. Wanted to ask you alls help in looking for a job and/or knowing of any good marketing firms in Houston. If you all wouldn't mind providing any suggestions, help, advise I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Sports is a tough industry to break into with full-time employment. Look into internships with the pro teams and take part-time work where you can get it (I have several part-time jobs with local teams). Check out Sugar Lands new baseball team. They'll be doing a lot of hiring over the next year. Also, the Astros are about to hire their seasonal staff...check out Astros.com job opportunities.

Astros and Texans both hire seasonal/semester-long interns. The Astros only offer them for college credit, so it may be too late since you're graduating in May (I'm sure they've filled the spots for the first part of the season). If you don't find anything by summer, apply to be a Texans training camp intern. It's only a few weeks long and you'll be a slave, but it can get your foot in the door.

It is a very tough industry. There are a lot of marketing grads out there that want to work in sports (not to mention the new breed of sports marketing majors) and there are a limited number of teams and positions open. That leads to low demand for these jobs, which means less than average pay.

Take it from an Aggie graduate who does marketing - don't waste time looking for a job in sports... or an agency. You'll have to get real experience first, unless you want to make piss poor money and not gain any useful experience. The sports marketing stuff is good for an internship. Not real life. You can get there, but you'll need to develop first. Also, whatever you learned at TAMU doesn't apply to modern day marketing. You'll have the foundation down maybe, but what do they actually teach you to do? You need to specialize in something to break in and make an impact.

Sign up with teamwork online then go to each team and register for email notifications when jobs become available. You wont make much money but something you can do nights and weekends is a Marketing Associates position from the Rockets. They hire current students and recent college grads. Look for that in the off season.

Avoid the ads in the back of the Greensheet that say "entry level sports marketing"...

Yea I know what you mean, I wouldn't say what I have learned is anything groundbreaking or truely essential to my success in marketing as to say a finance or accounting major. You have any suggestions then on any local companies that would offer worthwhile experience that could potentially be useful to getting a sports marketing job?

from what I understand, a lot of pro teams have a "your lucky you get to work for us" attitude..therefor the pay sucks.

From the decent jobs I've seen that come available in sports (saw one at TSU recently for PR) its not about having sports related experience, its about having marketing experience in general.

With sports I'd imagine you have maybe 4 general routes - PR/writing, graphics/media, online marketing or sales. So either grow in those areas or pick a niche.

What exactly do you want to do in marketing?

For me I knew I had an in, I could write, I could design (or so I thought) and I was tech savvy. I wanted as much hands-on experience as possible so I aimed for smaller businesses, that way I could actually DO things.

That was my strategy. You'll have to figure out yours. Its not about industry - I went from nonprofit to financial services to IT - its about the skills.
