MOST UNDERACHIEVING PLAYER: Steve Francis. By definition, only a good player can underachieve, which is why my choice is the Houston Rockets' point guard. He can still be brilliant, but on too many nights this season his shot has been awful, accounting for his career-low field goal percentage of .393 (as of Monday's games).

    ouch...truth hurts

Francis is not underachieving. He is just OVERRATED. Francis is great in bringing the highlight dunks and cross-over dribling. That's what he did and shined for the first 4 years as a player, high scores, high rebounds, and all the fancy stuff. Now JVG wants Francis to playing winning basketball, and he just faltered. Everybody can see that he is TO-prone, poor shooting, blowing fast breaks night in and night out, very fragile under pressure, etc. You got the point. Francis is not a winner.

I would have to agree. I wouldnt be as upset with his shooting % being so low this year if the turnovers were down.

The bottom line is Francis is not getting the on the move jumpers he is used to and is not driving to the basket as much and thus his percentage is much lower this year.

I completely disagree. It's not stats that matter, it's wins and losses. Right now, our record is about as good as last years, but we are showing signs of building consistency.

Steve is struggling in the new system, but he should be praised for following his coaches demands, not complaining, and making improvements in his overall game.

a true test of a player is how well he can play within a disciplined system. Damon Stoudamire averaged big time numbers when he was in Toronto because he always had the ball, but his team was subpar. What happened when he went to a contender? He became an slightly better than average PG.

Did you guys take note that the article said he is a GOOD PLAYER and he can still be BRILLIANT? And the reason for him making the list is his FG%, which will undoubtedly go up by the end of the year.

I thought Steve Francis sucked. Didn't I read in the game thread for the wizards game that Steve Blake was better than Steve Francis? How can he underachieve if he sucks?

Honestly, Francis is struggling this year to find himself in the new system, thats a fact. I have to agree he is not playing to his potential.

I agree, Francis is overrated. How many times has he made the all-star team being a coach's selection? I know the fans vote him in every year, but I bet the coach's would never select him. How many times has he been selected to all-nba 1st,2nd or 3rd team? How many times has he led his team to the playoffs? Can you say OVERRATED???

How about having near the worst AST / TO ratio among all the starting PGs in the league for the past couple years? Not mention this year.

yea, considering the dreadful team that we have had and the fact that our #1 cant hold his position in the post or play for more than 5 minutes at a time we should have been a top seed. Face it Gs, this team wasn't very talented before last year and since then we have been trying to integrate a new focal point in a new offense.

What about it? The article said he underachieved because of FG%.

I agree with you. Even with the increase in power in the WC, we have virtually the same record as last year. We are beating the teams we should beat and are taking it to the other teams and winning our share. As the system develops and the team learn their roles, we will have a very tough squad come playoff time.

I am hopeful that MJ can help Steve see how to play the 1 spot. If not, maybe SF can move to the 2 while MJ and Wilks man the 1 (assuming MJ is playing well enough to justify it). At the very least, we should get some looks at how the offense runs with MJ at 1 and SF at 2. Should be interesting.

As the season progresses, his assist:turnover ratio will continue to improve, as it has in the first half of the season.

He's on a shooting slump and the teams we've faced thus far are lucky he's shot less than 40% so far this season. Players work their way out of shooting slumps. Wasn't he 7-12 last night? Maybe his shot is finally coming around.

Max players do not get off easy when they are shooting 39%. Thats just the way it is. And thats the way it should be too.

If there was another player on this team recieving the max because management thought he would lead his team and is shooting 39%... well he would get the brunt of the criticism too.

any organization hoping for success, is hoping for much more out of their max player.

man I wish that was the case. I really want to believe that. But after the all star break last year, Steve shot something like 39% as well. We're talking about possibly a year long slump here.
