Link to blog post on chron.com and original story on www.houstonchronicle.com (link).

    Info on stores impacted (link)

That's no bueno, I always liked paying cash or with a debit card to save some money at Spec's, but I guess there's no such thing as a free lunch.

should it not be criminal at this point for anyone to store your ATM info, just because you used it to buy.

I'm not allowed to do this with my software. I sell my software for tens of thousands of dollars and have to be interviewed by fortune 500 security directors and sh.t and we store no private info like ATM sh.t.

It pisses me off that random cash registers are storing my ATM info.

New PCI standards which transfers liability from the card vendors to the merchants goes into effect soon. Hopefully, that will make the merchants be more diligent when it comes to how they store and/or protect PII. Until then, it is buyer be ware.

Thank goodness, the stores in Austin weren't impacted. I often go the the Spec's at 290 and MOPAC South when I run out of something. Usually pay cash there. Will always pay cash there from now on!

I read the info in the link. Sounded to me like credit cards were affected as well.

Good thing they do everything they can to encourage you not to use credit cards there.

My credit card numbers get stolen about once per year. Nothing happens to the consumer, it only hurts the businesses. Don't worry about it unless you use debit cards.

I go to Specs a lot, even the sandwiches there go hard and they have Hairbo, but I also get hammered and lose my debit card a lot. I've had to order new ones 3 times in the past 2 months. So I feel like Specs ****ed me, but also saved me.

Thankfully I already changed debit cards recently due to the Target breach. What makes this somewhat funny is how adamant Spec's is about you using your debit card instead of charging it as credit.

    Well this sucks.
Theyre adamant about it is because the markup on their prices are very low. Using a credit card carries a high usage/percentage fee on the retailer, taking away from their margins. Debit fees are far less than credit card fees for them. Thats why they offer 5% off for cash payers.
