Call me dumb and slap me stupid...but I can envision span working on his game this summer and fitting right in w/Coach A's sys. next year. In his post conference intrv. he even said that we wanted a player that can penetrate. Hell, I can picture Reefer coming of the bench or even being traded. I like alston but his fg % is just too low for us to win big. 2Cents
Span may still decide to go back to Greece, but I think he'll give it another year especially in light of the coaching change. He's an attacking guard and that's in short supply on this team. He just needs to learn the new system and keep his turnovers down and I think he will play some back up PG minutes to start with.
How can an attacking guard penetrate if teams will pack the lane and dare him to shoot? He should be working on his jump shot.... no matter where he's playing next year (don't think Greece hasn't forgotten his 2-16 performance in the gold medal game).
I guarantee you he didn't improve that shot during games only... it takes months of off-season work. At the very least, you need to take an approach that doesn't = "I was T-mac back in greece."
We already know he's not a 3 pt specialist like JVG wanted him to be. I think he can make a 15 to 18 ft shot at a good clip and he will get good looks in a motion offense.
Span needs to fix his game, whoever the coach is. Adelman, just like Van Gundy has worked better with PGs who can at least make some 3s and take care of the ball. Porter and Bibby are both good shooters, Bobby Jax, too... JWill not so much, but he didn't last long in SAC.
span will be the most improved rocket under adleman. he's so quick, he can get by enyone. he's strong enough to finish. he play's great defense. he's creative on offense. all he can't do is shoot and hold on to the ball. under adleman he won't be asked to shoot. although holding onto the ball is key lol
By this time next year he will have improved his shooting touch to that of the likes of "Raefer Alston" I mean come on... its not like our first option is a "great" shooting pg. The difference between the two is that if Vspan makes it inside he can actually get a shot off or find an open man in the paint vs having to just pull it back out to the 3 point line.
I went to youtube and punched in Rick Adelman's name. This is one of the video's on the first page. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y615OnHyzs That boy had the best part of his career under Adelman. Good ole Riley has taken all the spit, fire, spice, and spunk out of him. Go look at his A/TO ratio. It's perfectly acceptable and it was great under Adelman. I think VSpan could really turn into something under this coach. And he's a much better defender than JW.
Coach Adelman also consistently sat Jason Williams in the 4th Quarter in favor of more reliable guys like Bobby Jackson and, I believe, Derek Martin. He also eventually got rid of him in favor of Bibby. Adelman isn't exactly going to just roll the ball out and let everyone run wild.
I think Jason Williams and Vspan share a lot of common features. If he could develop a similar jump shot to "White Chocolate" he could be an all star in this league. Just mostly needs to play under more control. I mostly think the expectations were WAY to high, and he thought it wouldn't be that much of a different world NBA compared to Greece ball.
Vspan doesnt need to shoot lights out to play pg here. Not all pgs in the league can shoot great. Look at Tony Parker, not a great perimeter shooter but he scan create for himself and get to the basket. I think he had the most points in the paint in the league or something last year. Vspan cna do that. He can get into the lane and finish. If rafer could make a layup, he could probably still start, but he cant even do that.
He will get a fair shot, which is all I ever wanted because Rafer sucks..... It will be up to V-Span to see how he does with his shot at PG. DD
No one is expecting him to shoot lights out but we are expecting him shoot better than what he did, get a higher assist to turnover ratio. Honestly it doesn't take much to play PG here right now, but the fact is he wasn't ready, put way too much pressure on himself and had a terrible season. He is still young and believe a motion offense will work more to his strengths. Tony Parker might not be a good perimeter shooter, but he still shoots at a great percentage just inside the perimeter.
I honestly think, barring a trade, Rafer will still be our starting point guard next year. Angles and motion are two things Adelman has consistently mentioned, and both are in Rafer's positive qualities. Now if only he could hit a lay-up... V-Span will definitely see an increased role though -- as long as he consistently takes advantage of it. Adelman also mentioned how he liked Manu/TP's ability to attack, and that's something V-Span can bring to our team.
