For blocking banners I use AdSubtract. I rarely see advertisements anymore. Found it free on the web.

I use spamnet but it looks like they may have gone strictly pay offering only a free 30 day trial instead of the free version I am using, if you dig around on their site (here ) and can not find the free version I can send you the executable for the version i'm running if you need it, just let me know.
