It looks like a political bombshell in the making...despite the number of years since the Korean War, this has very real implications for American-Korean relations and of course the image of America and her allies.

Should America address this issue through a formal apology and/or settlement with the families? Should South Korea do so as well? I think it'll also really impact North Korea, which will just have one more reason to rattle sabers with the whole world. Really interesting...this definitely changes the American Cold War paradigm of bad communist vs good capitalist to something more gray.

I dont think America should do anything, unless they were directly involved in the massacre. Its time to stop trying to fix other people's ****. We have problems of our own.

Well, in one South Korea movie, there was already a similar depiction. A young south Korean woman was executed by the south after she signed on a ballot when the North army occupied her village. She did that b/c the North was promising her to give her rice and she was illiterate.

The post-war south Korea was a tragic scene. Many died from hunger and this sort of things.

But OTOH you have to be amazed at South Korea's achievement in less than 40 years after the war, from a country with nothing to a country with GDP per capita of $20,000 and a growing democracy.

If direct involvement in the massacres is proven, this may change from a should to a must. Already, the Commission is just in the early stages and a disturbing amount of American indifference or tacit approval have been recorded.

A very sad tale all around.

Very tragic and unfortunatley not surprising. The Korean War has been overshadowed by the WWII and Vietnam but it was one of the bloodiest wars in US history. In regard to the incidents in question I think we need to know a lot more before deciding whether the US needs to issue an apology or pay reparations.

I think the South Korean Truth and Reconciliation Commission is a good start in uncovering the truth of what happened then but at the same time attrocities where commited by both sides and until North Korea opens up we will never know the full story of what happened during the Korean War.

There are legitimate reasons for pulling the United States out of South Korea (not that I think we should) but why would this be a reason? Asking legitimately.

This easily is a legitimate reason, b/c it will further exacerbate South Koreans' animosity toward US stationing in their country.

I think we you are really getting at is why US involvement in a massacre that happened 40 years ago (if proved) trump all other "legitimate" reasons for US to stay in Korea.

Well, the answer is depending on from what angle you are looking at it.
